One of the giants-a wonderful mentor and mensch. We BWH residents and fellows were lucky to have served during the Marty reign!

Marty was one of a kind and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
From the first time i met him in a fellowship interview i sensed his generosity and humor. He talked as much about life and his passion for sailing as about professional issues. And soon after moving to Boston to work with him at the Brigham he continued to be more than just a mentor but also " Uncle Marty" as my kids called him. Including beloved boating trips when he was the captain of the ship.
He was always just a phone call away to discuss complicated patient issues, forensic cases and as well as how much to bid on a house!
Most often had a story to tell and did so with zest capturing our imagination.
Staff meetings often started at 8 PM over dinner running late into the night. Fridays on the medical psychiatry service concluded with sherry rounds in his office. And I will never forget in the August of my fellowship telling me the staff was going on vacation and the hospital was mine to enjoy. "Stay close to the patients and all will be well he advised"! Talk about career growth!
Marty was always interested in mentoring young faculty to broaden their horizons, helping them challenge themselves and helping them think critically about complex systems. He was way ahead of his time in talking about and living a life work balance.
Most of all Marty always made you feel he was interested in what you were doing inside and outside work. And with advice on how to grow.
We will all miss his wisdom, his quick with and life spirit.
I will miss his friendship, sage council and knowing he is there for a chat.

Marty Kelly, along with Mac Rogers and Mike Mufson, were on the search committee when I applied for a position at BWH. The three played a foundational role in the Department led by Jon Boris. Dr. Kelly's vision and clinical expertise, informed by his generosity, will never be forgotten.
