MARY COLLINS Obituary

COLLINS, Mary T. Of Cambridge, died peacefully April 16, 2016 at St Patrick's Manor in Framingham. Mary was born in Cambridge in 1920 to Joseph and Delia (Coen) Collins. Beloved sister of Eleanor C. Hogan of Framingham, John "Jack" Collins of Burlington, Sr. Elizabeth Collins S.B.S. of Bensalem, PA and the late Joseph. Mary never married but was the doting aunt to 12 nieces and nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews. Mary's early teaching career entailed learning Spanish and moving to Panama to teach soldiers' children from 1953 to 1954. After returning, she continued to volunteer in Boston, working with the Catholic Spanish speaking community, speaking fluent Spanish until she moved to Carmel Terrace in Framingham at the age of 86. After Panama, she returned to Cambridge and began a 35 year long career teaching in the Quincy School System. She looked forward to her many international travels, touring Ireland and visiting family there many times. She frequently travelled with her youngest sister, Sr. Elizabeth Collins. She was also an avid golfer and in her retirement took annual winter trips to Florida with her friends to golf. Mary was a wonderful sister, aunt, cousin, friend, co-worker to many. She often opened her home to relatives far and near whenever they were in town and sponsored her Irish relatives to come to America. Mary will be sorely missed. Funeral Mass in St Patrick's Manor Nursing Home Chapel, Framingham, Saturday, April 30 at 10:00 am. Interment No. Cambridge Catholic Cemetery. Eleanor, Sr Betty and all the Collins family. We send our deepest sympathy for your sad loss. I have vivid memories of Mary coming to the Coen family home in Ireland when I was young. When we visited Boston in 2006, Frank and Anna Higgins took us out to see you. We had the warmest of welcomes and spent several valued hours with you. Mary was a lovely person.
Our love,
Bridie (nee Coen) and John Taylor, England

Dear Sr Betty and all the Collins family.
It is with great sadness that we learn if the passing of Mary RIP. I had the pleasure of visiting Mary at St Patrick's Manor in 2011 with my cousins Anne and Carmel. We had also visited Mary at her home some years previously with our Uncle Frank Higgins and Anna, who have both also gone to their eternal reward. RIP.
Frank was one of Mary's irish relatives that she showed true kindness to when he first came to America and he told us many wonderful stories of this true lady.
Deepest sympathy to all the Collins family. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a h-Anam Dilís ( May her gentle soul rest in the peace of Christ).
Mary Marsden (Higgins)- grand-daughter of Mary- Kate Higgins ( Coen). Castlegrove, Tuam, Co Galway.
