MARY MINDESS Obituary

MINDESS, Mary Professor Emeritus, Lesley University Of Brookline, died peacefully at home on February 11, 2023. Mary was one of Lesley University's first professors of Early Childhood Education, where she taught for 53 years. Her career was notable for innovation and lifelong learning, but her true passion was in building powerful connected relationships with colleagues, staff, and students. In 1962, she launched the New England Kindergarten Conference, which ran for 40 years. Mary taught the first online course for Lesley, and delighted in bringing together learners and ideas from around the world. She helped to establish the Reggio Emilia Inspired Institute at Lesley, now in its third decade. In her retirement, she enjoyed dancing, French class, computer class, and book club, but she never stepped away from her role as a mentor and leader in her field. Mary is predeceased by her husband, the late Dr. David Mindess; and her son, Dr. Richard Mindess (Tracy). She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Karen Waldstein (Thomas); grandchildren, David Waldstein (Rachel), Dr. Nikki Yourshaw (Jeffrey), Danielle Mindess (Robert Cohen), Katie Badger (Daniel); great-grandchildren Henry, Greta, Cassidy, Margot, Sidney, and Thea; and sisters, Rebecca Slotnick, Diane DiFranza, and Sheila Goldstein (Jacob). Private Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 15, at 2:45pm. Naomi R Lesley university class of 1980

Mary was my friend, my mentor and my professor from 1976 to 1980 at Lesley. She had an incredible, caring, motivating, pizzazz about her that made you want to spend hours in her presence. I worked at the kindergarten conference, just so I could observe her in action. She was the best part of Lesley university as is reflected in the 50 years she gave to that institute of higher learning. I stayed in touch with her during the last four decades, and I am so glad I did. I wanted her to know how much she was loved, and the positive influence she had on so many teachers! Rest in peace Mary. Your memory will be carried forever in my heart. My deepest condolences to her daughter and her family.

When I arrived at Lesley, I lived in Germany. I tried to pretend I wasn't anxious. Thankfully Mary was my professor. She was always so supportive. At the end of Sophomore year, my mother was hospitalized due to a serious illness. I had to fly home ASAP. Mary was more than kind and supportive. She told me not to worry completing any of my assignments. She said she knew she and my other professors would accept my final projects late. I left Lesley and didn't worry about the consequences.
She was a thoughtful mentor. Sometimes one is blessed to meet and know an exceptional teacher. Mary was extraordinary. I will always be grateful for Mary's kindness.

I am still an ESOL educator working with immigrant families. (I believe Mary's philosophy still a part of me.)

Outstanding educator. I graduated Lesley College 1967 and became a wonderful teacher which I can attribute to Mary Mindess.
