Mary Rockwell Obituary

85, of 238 Spencer Dr., Amherst, formerly of Gloucester, MA, died Saturday, August 16, 2008, at Sunbridge of Hadley. She was born in Montague, MA, Dec. 4, 1922, daughter of the late Bartholomew J. and Anastasia (O'Connell) Carney. Mary was a graduate of Orange High School, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1945, where she received her BS in History and Psychology. She was President of Pi Beta Phi. Mary also chaired the 50th reunion of her class and was recipient of UMass' "Chancellor's Medal". She retired in 1987 as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for American Mutual Insurance Company. Mary was a communicant of Most Holy Redeemer Church in Hadley. She is survived by her husband W. Gordon Rockwell, whom she married Feb. 23, 1999, two sisters; Claire L. Castine of Athol, and Helen McWilliams of Fort Lauderdale, FL, six nieces; Kimberly and Cheney Castine of Athol, Caryn Perkins of Derry, NH, Michelle Gray of PA, Teresa Ash of Miramar, FL, and Eileen Minnick of Colorado Springs, CO, and a nephew, Michael Carney of Sullivan, NH, and several grand nieces and nephews. A brother, Bartholomew Carney, Jr., predeceased her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at Most Holy Redeemer Church, Russell St., Hadley. Internment will be at 2:30 PM in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol. There are no calling hours. Memorial gifts in her memory may be made to the University of Massachusetts Foundation, Inc.
