Mary Rohan Obituary

Age 82, of 22 Pearl Street, Holyoke, died Tuesday peacefully at home on June 24, 2003. Born in Cranston, RI on June 28, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nellie (Murray) Mahoney, and lived most of her life in Holyoke. Her husband, James F. Rohan predeceased her in 1975. Mary was a 1937 graduate of Holyoke High School and a 1939 graduate of Northampton Commercial College. She was a charter member of the Western Mass Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and a former member of the Holyoke/Chicopee Area Chapter of the Mentally Ill/Retarded. She was also a former member of the Holyoke Day Nursery (Maria Goretti Circle) and of the Holyoke Canoe Club. She was the former Administrative/Personal Assistant to David M. Bartley, President of Holyoke Community College (HCC) and received the HCC Service Award in recognition of her many years of service to the college. She retired in 1988. Mary was a devoted mother and grandmother, who will be missed and always loved by her family and many cherished friends. She is survived by six sons; James Rohan of San Juan PR, Joseph Rohan and his wife Neva of Montgomery, Mass, Thomas Rohan and his wife Deanne of South Hadley, Terrance Rohan of Holyoke, William Rohan and his wife Maureen of Holyoke, Patrick Rohan and his wife Geri of Poughkeepsie, NY, and one daughter, Mary Rohan of Boston, MA. She also leaves eight beloved grandchildren; Sean, Megan, Julie, Andrew, Tara, Jim, Katherine and Steven Rohan. The funeral will be Friday at 9:15 a.m. from the James P. Hobert & Sons Funeral Home in HOLYOKE, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Cross Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 2-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of Western New England, Inc., at 50 Maple Street, PO Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102-9058 or charity of your choice.
