MAURICE VANDERPOL Obituary

Vanderpol, Dr. Maurice Of Needham, MA, died peacefully in his sleep on October 19 at the age of 92. A renowned psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Ries lived a life full of accomplishments, while overcoming significant adversity. He will be remembered for piloting a school consultation program that, for the first time, brought mental health perspectives to the public school setting. Honoring a Dutch war resister who saved hundreds of Jewish children during the Holocaust, Ries founded the Suskind Fund, which endows the Young at Arts program at the Wang Center/CitiCenter in Boston. He served on the Board of Directors of Facing History and Ourselves, and shared his experiences in occupied Amsterdam during World War II with hundreds of students in and around the Boston area. He served on the staff of McLean Hospital for over thirty years, and served as a member of the Board of the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. Ries demonstrated great resilience, an area he both researched and admired, right up to the last days of his life, sharing stories of his youth with his children and grandchildren, and singing Dutch songs with Netty, his beloved wife of 66 years. Through the sadness, the family is honored to have had these many years of happiness and love. Besides his wife, Netty (Schwarz) Vanderpol of Needham, he is survived by his son, Dolph Vanderpol and his wife, Anne Josephson of Newton and their two children, Emily and Sam; and his daughter, Nikki Vanderpol and her husband Joseph Russo of Waltham and their two children, Alex and Julia. Ries is also survived by his brother, Jim Vanderpol and his wife Carol of Plaistow, NH along with several close nieces and nephews. Interment will be private. The family will hold a reception on Saturday, October 25 at North Hill, 865 Central Avenue, Needham, MA from 4:30–7:30. A memorial service honoring his life will be held at The Memorial Church, Harvard University, One Harvard Yard, Cambridge, MA on Friday, November 21st, at 2 PM. Donations in his memory may be made to: the Walter Suskind Memorial Fund, c/o the Citi Center for the Performing Arts, Attn: Josiah Spaulding, 270 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02216 and/or Facing History and Ourselves, 16 Hurd Road, Brookline, MA, 02445. At Dr. Vanderpol's 90th birthday celebration at Facing History, he sang to us. He had been taking singing lessons, because he had always wanted to. I found his example of embracing life and continuing to be a learner deeply inspiring. I was honored to have had Dr. Vanderpol be a part of my 7th and 8th grade class for a semester as he was learning about Facing History. What an incredible experience for my students to have a Holocaust survivor sharing the class with them! The last time I saw Dr. Vanderpol, I was going through some hard transitions in my life. He could see it in my face and he spoke to me with gentle compassion and wisdom. His words stay with me to this day. I will truly miss him.

My Condolences to Mrs. Nettie Vanderpol and her family. Dr. Vanderpol was a wonderful man. I remember my interview with him when he shared his life story and interests during one of his visit to the health center at North Hill. It was an honor to have known such a great, but humble man. He will truly be missed. Sincerely Rosey
