MICHAEL GOULDING Obituary

GOULDING, Michael James 23, of Scituate passed away unexpectedly following an automobile accident on November 20, 2016. He was the beloved son of Richard and Robin Goulding of Scituate.

Michael was the loving brother of Rick and his wife Caitlin of Norwell, and Robert, Douglas, and Mary all of Scituate.

He is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and his new nephew, Bodie.

Michael graduated from Boston College High School in 2012 and from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA this past May. He hoped to use his education and skills in urban planning and regional development to help lift up those impacted by job loss and homelessness. Always following his heart and thinking of others, Michael believed strongly in the notions of empathy for and kindness toward all living things. Mike was an avid arborist and musician and enjoyed playing both acoustic and bass guitar. He also deeply enjoyed nature and spending time with his dogs, August and Amber.

A visitation will take place on Friday, November 25, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent Street in Scituate.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 10 Summer Street in Cohasset followed by interment at Trinity Park Cemetery in Scituate.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to The Scituate Library Foundation, 85 Branch Street, Scituate MA 02066 ("In Memory of Michael Goulding"). Your donation will be used to help plant trees at the new library and bring together two of Michael's passions: trees and books. Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home

December 10, 2016

My sincere condolences to the Goulding family. At times like these God can give us "the power beyond what is normal" so that we can keep on going from one day to the next. (2 Cor 4:7)

December 8, 2016

Mr. Goulding, I just received a phone call from my son Schuyler, one of your students at Babson. He had just found out about your Michael today and could not understand how his favorite teacher was able to reach the class shortly after his tragic loss, without sharing his grief with the class. Schuy wanted me to look up Michaels' page so that I could see just " how handsome he was and what a nice kid he was." He was right, my heart feels very heavy right now.
I grew up in Humarock and very much love the idea of new trees for the library. God bless,
Leslie Hedberg

To Mike's family, friends, loved ones.

Mike was a great friend to me from my first day of college, before I knew anyone. For some reason, we both tended to eat dinners alone around the same time in our dining commons and got to talking. He was one of the kindest and most open people I've had the privilege to know. We had so many talks about the way cities are designed and planned, how certain marginalized groups are positioned in suboptimal locations...he was an important friend to me when I was very lonely, and i really miss him.

Dear Family - Mike was a student of mine and I had the opportunity to know he was living life to the fullest. I spent 7 days canoeing and backpacking with him in the south east. The trip was more than the skills, it was a time for students to be free from academics and love the outdoor world. I spent one evening hiking with Mike and we just talked and talked, about life, about the world, he was always so happy and carefree. I have such fond memories of that trip, the personal conversarion and zest for life Mike had were amazing. Mike had a gift to brighten up a group of students with his wisdom, knowledge, or simple smile. I am sorry for your loss, but know that he impacting the community at Hampshire in such meaningful ways. I pray for your family during the holidays. My deepest condolences to the Goulding family. Mikey was a dear friend and my next door neighbor at Hampshire our first year of school. You should be so very proud of what an amazing person he was and how many people he touched. I feel so lucky to have been his friend, he will remain in my heart forever. It will be hard to ever drink a cup of tea without vividly imagining him in a knit sweater, mug of tea in hand and smile on his face.

To the Goulding family. My deepest sympathy for your loss. It was my pleasure to be one Michael's rugby coaches at BC High, and help him as he worked on his scrum half skills. I thought he epitomized everything about that position. Scrappy, tough, and relentless, a great team mate and a pleasure to coach. I was always impressed about how hard he worked, and how he never gave up. He was an example to us all. My deepest sympathy. Yours Aye, Ross MacDonald
