MICHAEL GURISH Obituary

GURISH, Michael F. Ph.D. Of Dedham, research immunologist, Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, died May 31, 2018, in a sailing accident. Mike was beloved wherever he was—in his family, his neighborhood, his work, his yacht club. He was an upbeat, positive force in life, with a smile on his face whether he was laughing with his family for any number of irreverent reasons, delighting in perfecting something on his beloved sailboat, or discovering a new way forward for his or someone else's research. He was an unselfish collaborator in his research and shared the joys of science and discovery with many colleagues around the world. Mike received his BA in Chemistry and BS in Biology from University of California, Irvine in 1975, and his Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT in 1982. After a post-doctoral fellowship at Brandeis University, he moved to Brigham & Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in 1987. In his 31 years in the Division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy, he was known as a preeminent mast cell biologist, an immunology professor to first year medical students, a mentor for aspiring scientists in the Boston public schools through the Brigham's Student Success Jobs Program, and the general go-to Mr. Fix-it for almost any of the computer or mechanical equipment in the lab. One of his last comments to his wife was how much he was enjoying his golden years of science—the collaborations, the intellectual stimulation, the lab bench work--simply being, once again, a "lab rat." Mike leaves his wife, Margaret Matthews of Dedham, MA, his daughter, Gillian Gurish and her partner Michael Abramovich of Chelsea, MA, and son, Ernie Gurish and his fiancee Nicole Davidow of Dedham, MA. He also leaves his father, Harold Gurish, Point Richmond, CA, his brothers, Matthew Gurish, Sparks, NV, and Jonathon Gurish, San Rafael, CA, and his cousin, Eric Dean, Eureka, CA. Perhaps his "blonde girlfriend", dog Izzy, will miss him the most. Everyone who knew Mike will miss his warmth, his irreverent sense of humor, and his unfailing support when needed. He was a special man. Visiting hours will be held at George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High Street, Dedham, MA on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from 6 to 8 PM. A memorial service will be held at the First Church and Parish, 670 High Street, Dedham, MA on Friday, June 8 at 3 PM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who want to remember Mike consider donations in Mike's memory to Habitat for Humanity (www.habitat.org) or Guide Dogs for the Blind in Smithtown, NY (www.guidedog.org). Michael was one of the nicest, warmest, most authentic people I've ever been blessed to know. His laugh, his smile, his sense of humor, his love of life never failed to brighten my days working with him. Of course, and I think many would agree, he was certainly mildly crazy...but then only the best people are!

I first met Michael (albeit briefly) working in Morrie Granger's lab at UC Irvine. But fortune favored us as we ended up working together in graduate school at the Univ of Utah. It was a joy to share an office and a lab with him as we pushed back the frontiers of science as well as the beers, the hikes, the skiing and summers of Daquiris made with strawberries from his back yard.

The world is a poorer place without him.

Dr. Gurish: A role model, a mentor.

Dear Margaret ,Gillian and Ernie, Ruth and I were so sorry to hear that Mike had passed away. Juliet kindly phoned to tell us the very sad news. We know you will miss him terribly. He was such a lovely person who always seemed to have a lightness in his heart and a smile on his face. When we met you last October after all these years it was like we never had left Dedham. Mike was such a kind person and so hospitable . When we knocked at the window in Babcock Place in October he had us sitting down and a glass of wine in our hands before we could blink. We are so happy that our son David met him that night .I can see from all the other messages that so many people think he was a wonderful special person. He really was.
We have been and we will be thinking of you during these difficult times. Michael and Ruth

I don't believe I ever saw him without a smile and a hearty laugh. His love for you all was evident in everything he did. Keeping you in my heart, thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

Good bye dear Mike the best of friends. Losing Dan was hard, as you know. This is harder still. You were kind and smart, generous in time and interest, pissed at times and forgiving, laughed a lot and saw the irony in life, had a great sense of humour, loved the kids, Margaret and your various neurotic dogs, the lab (at times!), science always and sailing always, always. My favorite memory is being your sailing buddy the first year of the first boat, sailing in all weathers that year, night sailing and running a ground! You gave us so many stories to tell and so many happy times. Thank you for the friend you were.

this beloved and esteemed physician and mast cell biologist. As Chair of The Mastocytosis Society, I would like to express our deep condolences on behalf of the patients, caregivers and families affected by mast cell diseases, as well as the physicians whom we work with who might not yet have heard this tragic news. Mike was a true jewel of a man and a gift to all of us. He will be missed so very much, but his contributions to the field will impact those of us affected by mast cell diseases now and in the future. Oh Margaret, I am so sorry to hear this news. I will always remember the kindness and hospitality you and Mike offered to us when Terry, Mary, and I came to Boston. What a great time we had sitting around your dining room table eating and talking. Mike had the coffee ready when we woke up in the morning and offered lots of great advice on places to go while we were there. He will be terribly missed. Please know I am lifting you and your family up in prayers of love and comfort. Love,Angie Bennett

I am shocked and sadden to hear we have lost such a wonderful person, friend and colleague. Mike was the perfect collaborator, he was upbeat, confident and always looking to solve the problem. I will miss his laugh and his stories, and the chance to do an other project with him. My condolences to his family and friends at BWH and HMS.

I am saddened by the news of Mike's passing. He was my mentor in the BWH some 30 years ago and introduced me in the magic world of nucleic acids. He was one of the most brilliant, helpful, and funniest fellows I've ever met! My deepest sympathy to the family.

Mike was a good friend and a selfless colleague. He always helped people, never seeking credit for having done so. We will all miss his smile, his cheer, and his intellect. He was a genuinely good man.

Michael was one of the kindest, supportive, caring people I have ever known. Without Michael we would not have had the opportunities in science to find treatments that will help millions of people. His smile and positivity were infectious. Michael was never happy unless he was helping someone. To Michael's family, you need to know how much he cared for you and loved you. When I would ask if we could meet after work to collaborate, Micheal almost always declined in favor of being home with Margret. As a fellow avid sailor, I can only take some solace in that he passed from us doing what he loved. He is, and will always be terribly missed. He made the world a better place.
