MITCHELL EVICH Obituary

EVICH, Mitchell D. Age 60, of Somerville, died of complications due to Alzheimer's on Dec. 25. Mitch was born to Bettyjane (Christie) and the late Mitchell Evich Sr., in Bellingham, WA. After attending Western Washington University, Mitch was a journalist in Waterbury, CT, and the Boston area. He transitioned to writing fiction, and got his Master's in literature at Northeastern University, where he met his wife, Paula Woolley. His experience on his family's commercial fishing boat and as a crew member in Alaska inspired much of his writing. Mitch worked most recently at the MA Municipal Association. After his diagnosis in 2015, he wrote a blog about living with dementia, A Diminishing Window. In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves his brother, Matt Evich of Mt. Vernon, WA; children, Andryc Evich of Washington, DC, and Iris Evich of Somerville; cousins and in-laws; and many friends. Due to Covid, funeral and interment will be private. The wider community is invited to attend via live-stream on Thursday, Jan. 6, at 12:30 pm on the YouTube channel of St. James Episcopal Church of Cambridge. To memorialize Mitch, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association of MA/NH, 309 Waverly Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452.

Looking around at random I just came upon this obituary. Please accept my very belated sympathies. I had both Mr. Evich and Miss Christie as teachers in my years attending Blaine Grade School. Sincerely, Dianne Brown Janise.

My heart goes out to your family. What a loss. What a kind man Mitch was. I got to know him during our Trackpac days, and was inspired by his bravery in the face of his illness. I will miss seeing him and Paula on their walks together through Somerville.

Mitch was such a great friend to all of us boys from Bellingham. We grew up together and had so many good times and shared great memories. We will never forget Mitch and I know that my friends and I will always carry Mitch in our hearts and he will always be remembered. We love you Mitch!

Mitch was my former student at Western Washington University and from the time I first got to know him I appreciated his interest and even intensity in seeking not just information, but in getting as much accuracy and development in the information as he could find. His loss is personal and heart-felt.

He was an inspiration both as an editor and a writer. I will always be grateful for the grace he brought to the office many years ago and for showing me how to marry rigorous editing with human compassion. The world could definitely use more people like Mitch. Sending love and condolences to his family.
