More than any other teacher in medicine, Dr. Swartz taught me how to seek curable causes of life-threatening illness, often involving previously unrecognized or inadequately treated infection, often in a patient's 11th hour. He taught me and my fellow interns and residents at the Massachusetts General Hospital lessons in kindness and compassion, not to mention humility. These lessons, given to us nearly one-half century ago, have not faded from memory. May Dr. Swartz's influence continue bringing light to dispel darkness. My condolences to his children who shared him with us and with his patients, but who, nonetheless, felt his love and warmth, as we did.

He was a delightful man. I so enjoyed his warm smile and lighthearted word play. His family made him so happy. May his memory be for a blessing.
