Mr Checkoway was my favorite teacher of all my teachers in my life. He was non judgmental and accepting and a wonderful man.

We immigrated to USA in 1982 and that fall I enrolled in Driscoll. Mr. Checkoway was one of those teachers who knew how to handle a group of young kids, focus them and get them enthusiastic about art beyond just what's on paper. Always think back to those days.

I just learned the sad news about Mr. Checkoway and wanted to send my belated condolences to the family. Mr. Checkoway was my art teacher at Driscoll School back in the 50's. I had a 50 year career as a graphic designer that included being Art Director of The Atlantic, Art Director of Little, Brown & Company, and for the last 18 years before I retired Vice President, Creative Director of St. Martin's Press. I think it's fair to say that Mr. Checkoway was an early influence who identified and encouraged my talent. We spoke very occasionally through the years but I'm happy I was able to see him one last time at the Driscoll Reunion. In 1973 I was on vacation in Italy. I was at the Vatican with a friend and we went to have a cappuccino at a cafe across the street. Who do I find there? Norman Checkoway! Imagine the thrill of being an artist and bumping into your grammar school art teacher after just viewing Michaelangelo's Sistine ceiling! I will always remember that day and that kind, gentle man. Goodbye, Mr. Checkoway, and thanks for everything.

Mr. Checkoway, as we called him, provided solace for me in his beautiful wide open high ceilinged and bright art room at Driscoll School. I spent many long peaceful after school hours in that room. Mr. Checkoway was always so generous with his warmth and his time. Thank you, Mr. Checkoway, you were a wonderful teacher. All very best wishes to his family.

I had the pleasure of having Norman for art class in the 8th grade. I remember seeing him for the 100th anniversary of the Driscoll School a few years back where he was wearing a tuxedo t-shirt. "Well, the invitation said 'festive'," he replied to a comment made regarding his attire. He was a great teacher and I and the members of "That Table" will miss him very much. My prayers and condolences to the family.

Mr Checkoway was my art teacher in Brookline .
He inspired me to become a teacher.
I stayed in touch with Mr Checkoway , who insisted on me calling him "Norman ".
He was my favorite teacher of all times. . He was kind and always had nice comments to make about all our work , no matter how bad it was .
I am deeply saddened about this news.
We stayed in touch and I wanted Mr Checkoway and his wife to visit me in Israel , a country he loved so much .
May he Rest In Peace. He was a true good soul ❤
