Paul Hochanadel Obituary
Of West Yarmouth, formerly of Westwood, June 24 at age 82 after battling Alzheimer's for many years. He was the husband of Eleanor MacKinnon Hochanadel of Newton and Westwood for 59 years after sweeping her off her feet on a beach in Cohasset. Mr. Hochanadel was born in Gibsonburg, Ohio. Always a hard worker, as a child he helped sustain his family during the Great Depression by running a paper route, fishing, and later worked in the local lime plant. In WWII he served in the Navy as a Lieutenant JG in the South Pacific aboard APL 47. After 3 years of active duty, he was honorably discharged and went on to graduate with honors from Bowling Green State University in Ohio where he earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration. He continued his education in business with courses at Harvard University and New York City College. He worked for General Electric in New York City where he served in various major marketing capacities, and then became Vice President and Director of Marketing for ITT's Royal Electric Corporation. In the early 1960's he moved on to become Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sales and Marketing for the Commercial Division at Koehler Manufacturing Co. in Marlborough, MA for 25 years. He was renowned for his creative marketing and sales techniques and was frequently a principal speaker at meetings of the many marketing associations to which he belonged. Mr. Hochanadel was a founding member of the West Dennis Yacht Club where he won several trophies sailboat racing with his son, David. After moving to West Yarmouth he continued to enjoy sailing with his family in Lewis Bay and Nantucket Sound. He enjoyed teaching his five children sports and games, and was a champion ping pong player. Always concerned with his community, he served as President of Harborside Estates Association and was also an active environmentalist. He helped to "keep the wood in Westwood" and lower the level of pollution produced by the utility company on Cape Cod Canal. He had a talent for writing. During his retirement he wrote two books of his memoirs, leaving a wonderful legacy for his family and future generations. In addition to his wife Mr. Hochanadel is survived by his son Paul J. Hochanadel, Jr., daughter-in-law Marguerite Hochanadel and granddaughter Jessica A. and husband Jeffrey J. Arthur of California, son David J. Hochanadel, daughter-in-law Lori G. Hochanadel and granddaughter Sharon M. Hochanadel of Mansfield, MA, daughter Dr. Gail S. Hochanadel of Topsfield, MA, and daughter Deborah A. Hochanadel, Esq., of West Yarmouth, MA. He was pre-deceased by his eldest daughter, Lynne E. Hochanadel of Marblehead, MA in 1997. May they meet in Heaven. Memorial Services will be private.
