PAUL PAGET Obituary

PAGET, Paul G. Owner Boston's Swan Boats Paul G. Paget of Jamaica Plain, 99, passed peacefully on August 22, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born and raised in Brighton, MA, one of seven children to the late John and Ella (Guest) Paget and was owner of Boston's iconic Swan Boats. Beloved husband of Marilyn (Cotter) Paget of Lynn, MA whom he married in 1952. Together they raised five children. Paul is survived by his children Paul Paget, Jr. and his wife Clare of Hingham, MA, Mark Paget and his wife Elizabeth of Shelton, CT, Jay Paget and his husband Ray Dalere of Boston, MA, Lyn Paget-Swardstrom and her husband Eric Swardstrom of Boston, MA, and Kristina and Patrick Palmer of Windham, NH. Paul is the proud grandfather of Andrew Paget, Matthew Paget, John Paget, Brendan Paget, Jeff Nyamwaro, Alex Paget, Keira Paget, Paul William Paget, Kyle Swardstrom, Vera Rae Swardstrom and Grace Swardstrom, and 10 great-grandchildren. Paul is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Paul graduated from Boston Latin School in 1941 and interrupted his Boston College education when he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. During his service in the war, he served as Commander of an amphibious landing ship in the Pacific Theater carrying military troops and supplies to the various islands in the Pacific. After the war, he completed his studies at Boston College and continued on to attend the B.C. Graduate School of Social Work from which he graduated in 1949 with a specialization in fundraising. His professional contributions included executive and fundraising work at a number of non-profit organizations in the greater Boston area including Greater Lynn United Way, American Red Cross, United Cerebral Palsy Association, Massachusetts Fund for Children, Navy Relief Society, and Family Counseling and Guidance Centers. During his lifetime, he served voluntarily on the boards of several organizations including the Boston Latin School Alumni Association, Boston College Alumni Association, Parkway Boys Club, Travelers Aid Society, and the Advisory Board of Aging of the Archdiocese of Boston. Paul was a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and a past Trustee of the Boston Catholic Television Center. Paul held a deep connection to the organizations he supported throughout his lifetime. He was the grandson of Robert and Julia Paget, who established the Swan Boats in 1877 and in the early 1950's Paul joined his father John in the family business. He combined a lifelong career working for numerous charitable organizations while managing the seasonal Swan Boat operation with the help and support of his wife Marilyn. His family continues to operate the business now in its 145th season. Following the model of his generous ancestors, Paul donated thousands of free rides on the Swan Boats to various organizations serving disadvantaged communities throughout Boston and beyond. He never wanted to see a person denied the enjoyment of the peaceful ride along the Public Garden lagoon and insisted that people without the means would ride for free. He honored his family's legacy providing hundreds of young men and women a unique and memorable job experience during their formative years. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing countless stories of his experience commandeering this small fleet with all who would listen. Relatives and friends are invited to Visiting Hours at William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, WEST ROXBURY, on Friday, August 26, 2022 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Not sure what to say?

I am reading a book "The Lioness of Boston" about Isabell Stewart Gardner and read the scene of the inaugural swan boat ride with her, her 3 nephews and Robert Paget. I had to look up him and learn about him. I came upon Paul Paget and this most beautiful legacy of your family, the creation of the swan boats, and the tie to Boston´s history! I am so very sorry for your loss but am so grateful to your families´ part in adding to what makes us proud of Boston.

Paul and Marilyn were dear friends and influenced my teenage years when I had the joy of babysitting for Paul Jr. when they lived in Hancock Village and later in Jamaica Plain. May they rest in the peace and love of their family and good works. Judi Dennehy

Jay, I am sorry for your loss. I remember what a great reputation your dad had amongst the kids who worked for him and his generosity. I even got a free ride on the Swan Boat.
Condolences to you and your family

To the Paget Family,
I had the great pleasure of working for Mr. Paget, on the Swan Boats, summers in the late seventies. He taught me that a job, any job, needed to be taken seriously, but could also be fun. After I had stopped working at the Swan Boats, my sister graduated from BU Med. Her and her two friends were dressed in their graduation regalia, post graduation ceremony. They wanted to ride the Swan Boats. Mr. Paget, recognized me and suggested I drive one of the boats, for my sister, our family and her friends. My sister, now retired, still reminiscences about that trip. I am forever grateful for having known and worked for Paul Paget.

My deepest sympathies to all of the family. Paul's grand daughter, Grace Swardstrom assists in the care of my Mom. She is highly in-tune and caring to my Mom and I am sure she has inherited her warmth and tenderness from her grandfather. Sending love and healing to all at this time.

My condolences to the entire Paget family. The world, and especially the City of Boston, has lost a truly inspiring man who contributed in so many ways to making the world a better place. Mr. and Mrs. Paget were so kind and generous to all in our JP neighborhood and especially to my family. When I was 15 Mr. P. gave me the incredible opportunity to hold the greatest summer job in Boston at the Swan Boats where I worked for 3 summers in the 1980s. He was such a great role model, always had a story to tell and taught me life lessons on a daily basis. I am grateful that his legacy lives on in his amazing children and in the generations that follow them.

I am extremely sorry for your loss. You were very supportive and took very good care of Mr. Paget as his health was declining to this point where he is now "resting in peace". Please, if there is anything I could do feel free to always reach out!

One of my best memories working for the Boston Herald was getting the call from Lyn about the boats being prepared for the season. Always made a good photo. Alan McCourt was a friend from JP and he helped me get some great feature photos. My brother Liam peddled the boats for a summer job during high school.

I'll always count myself as fortunate to be among the many people who enjoyed, however peripherally, Mr. Paget's kindness, humor, and decency. I still put "Swan Boat Driver" on my resume. Thinking of your family today.

Dear Paget Family,
My mother, Theresa Curran Nash, and my stepmother, Barbara Haviland Nash were good friends of your mother and father. Your father, my mother and my stepmother all met while attending the BC School of Social Work. My mother introduced your mother to your father while she and Barbara were young social workers at the Lynn Catholic Charities! What a small world!

I am sorry for your loss and wish you peace in knowing how well your father lived his life!

Sincerely,
Mary Nash
