Not sure what to say?

February 21, 2013

Dear Ruth, Rick, Rob, Nancy and family. My father,Eddie Kaplan, was a good friend of Paul's. Several years ago, right after my father's death, Paul sent me some photos of my dad playing the violin on Iwo Jima. He also wrote me a touching and much appreciated letter. I have been doing some research on my father, and just happened to come across this site. I am sorry for your loss. My father talked often about Paul, and their time spent together during and after the war.

I will always remember how tightly he held my hand on my last visit to see him - I think he knew it would be the last time he saw me. I loved him and will miss him so very much. Pat Jones

Mr. Phipps was a people person. He loved having people around. He was a very generous and giving person. Mr. Phipps was so welcoming to all us runners on Marathon Morning. From my very first Boston marathon in 2003 right up through 2012, he welcomed all of us and fed us breakfast. Here I was in 2003 running the Boston Marathon for the first time, really overwhelmed and feeling out of my league. Mr. Phipps assured me I was right where I belonged and that I'd do well in my race. He always tooks a group picture and followed our times. Their entire house was given over to all us runners, you couldn't walk through the kitchen or the den for all the runners stretching on the floor. Marathon morning won't be the same without Mr. Phipps.
My thoughts and prayers to all of you.

Paul never missed a six footer on the 18th to win a match. I will miss the wink of his eye as he pulled the ball out of the cup.--Don Backlund

Dear Ruth and family:
As a little girl growing up across the street, I always felt special when Paul would return my wave with a smile, or chat with me if I passed by while he was out and about in the front yard. He was genuine and kind, and left quite an impression. I always loved seeing "Mr. Phipps".
My condolences.
