PAUL SALTERS Obituary

SALTERS, Paul J. Newspaper Man, aged 86, passed peacefully at home in Pembroke, in the loving care of his family after a long illness, on Monday, July 5, 2021. Born in Quincy, on November 30, 1934, Paul was the eldest son of Joseph and Ethel (Swanson) Salters, of Weymouth. Paul spent his early years with a tight knit group of friends swimming in the Quincy quarries, hiking the Blue Hills, playing ball at Kincaid field, and discovering music at the Thomas Crane Public Library, where he met his beautiful wife, Mary. They shared, among other things, a love of classical music that lasted seven decades. They had just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on July fourth. Paul earned a BA from Boston University, and after a brief stint in the classroom, enjoyed a lengthy and distinguished career in the newsroom as a journalist for the Patriot Ledger, the Herald Traveler, and the Brockton Enterprise, where he was a reporter, editor, and wrote a weekly column. Paul had discerning taste in opera, gourmet food and wine, literature, architecture, and art. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, adventurous cooking, and hosting epic dinner parties. One thing important to Paul was the power of language, words, and a good turn of phrase. He deployed them with precision, never hesitating to correct, or offer a more exacting way to say what one meant. Of all of his unique qualities, his uncanny memory was the most remarkable. He could recall not only vivid details of his early childhood, but also dates, obscure quotes, and was able to describe every meal he ate at any event, or any restaurant, over the last seven decades. Paul lived with his wife Mary in Pembroke for 61 years where he contributed to the community by serving as a volunteer firefighter for High Street Company Two, by joining the Pembroke Lions, and as a member of the Republican Town Committee. In his retirement, he enjoyed visiting with his grandchildren, hanging out with the guys at Morgan Power Equipment on Mondays, and his regular outings with ROMEO, Retired Old Men Eating Out, with his old newspaper colleagues in the Boston area. Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Mary (Tirone) Salters; his three children, Paula (Salters) McKeever and her husband, Dr. Bradley McKeever of Saint Augustine, FL, Joseph Salters and his wife Karen (Anderson) Salters of Onset, Nancy (Salters) Pearson and her husband Brian Pearson of Portsmouth, NH, and four grandchildren; and four grandchildren, Kristine Salters of Seattle, WA, Tucker Pearson of Boulder, CO, Lauren Salters, of Dover, NH, and Michael Salters of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by his brother Ronald Salters of Weymouth. Visiting Hours will be held on Monday, July 12, from 4-7 pm at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Route 53, HANOVER. A Funeral Home Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 13, at 11 am, followed immediately by a Graveside Service at Pembroke Center Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul's memory to the exceptional caregivers at Cranberry Hospice, 36 Cordage Park Cir., Plymouth, MA 02360. As a liberal Democrat, I'm gonna miss my lovable conservative Republican friend, the old curmudgeon, a whole lot. He was truly an original. Met him at BU's College of General Education back in the 1950s and discovered even then, when he walked into a room, he took it over. Became friends as journalists and fellow members of ROMEO (Retired Opinion Makers Eating Out), and Paul certainly had opinions when we gathered to eat out. His profound voice undoubtedly will be missed at the table. Sincerest condolences.

I met Paul when I was hired by the BE to write obituaries. The obituary prepared for your father is a LOVELY one. He was a special man and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Thoroughly. Happy to be reminded of him. His friend Kelly

Our condolences to Mary and family. I have memories growing up on High St. Dad both and I were involved with Station 2. I remember Paul writing a story in the Ledger of my working at Logan Airport about the Air Piracy Program and the US Marshals Service. When my siblings, Phyllis, Nancy, John and Dennis discuss High St, the name Salters is always mentioned with good loving memories. Our thoughts and prayers to you all. Rest In Peace Paul.
