PETER LAWRENCE GILL

GILL, Peter Lawrence Died in Annapolis, MD, on September 12, 2013, at age 92. He was pre-deceased by all of his siblings, by his partner, Joanne Shawcross, and by his beloved son, Nicholas B. Gill. Dr. Gill is survived by his three children, Jonathan, Dorcas, and Timothy, and his first wife, the mother of his children, Jane Roberts Gill, a clinical social worker of Putney, VT, from whom he was divorced in 1972. He is also survived by his second wife, Leah Jane Copass, a psychotherapist in Brookline, MA, from whom he was divorced in 1990. He also leaves seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dr. Gill graduated from Harvard University in 1942, and served four years in the US Navy during WW II. He then earned a PhD. in Clinical Psychology from Boston University. A courageous intellectual rebel, Dr. Gill is remembered by his family and many patients and students, who loved him for his kindness, generosity, warmth, compassion, and humor, and revered him for his iconoclasm, originality, brilliance, and matchless insight into human behavior. He made major contributions to individual, couples, and group psychotherapy, as well as developing his remarkable parenting strategy, Guest-Host.
