PORTIA A. MEARS

MEARS, Portia A. (Ierardi) Of Quincy, formerly of Abington, passed away on June 19th 2016 at the age of 98. Wife of the late John A. Mears. Devoted sister of John, Joe, Anthony, Dominic, Philip, William, Rose and Lucile Ierardi. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Portia graduated from Boston Girls Latin School in 1935, Boston University in 1939 and received her Masters degree in Italian and French at Middlebury College. She worked in book publishing in Boston and in editorial work at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Portia and John Mears taught at the University of Indiana after they wed. Portia loved teaching and music; she studied classical piano. She earned a second masters at Boston University and worked as a Reading Specialist at South Shore Vocational Tech School until she retired. Her heritage and her faith were sustaining values. Portia will be greatly missed by all those who were blessed to have known her. Reposing at the Cartwright Funeral Home, 68 So. Franklin Street, (Rte 37) HOLBROOK until 9:45 AM on Friday followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph Church, Holbrook. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours Thursday 5:00- 8:00PM. Burial Monday June 27th at 10:15 AM in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Portia's name the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, 120 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02108 or the Children's Hospital, 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA 02115.
