PUNYAMURTULA KISHORE Obituary

KISHORE, Dr. Punyamurtula of Chestnut Hill, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Sheela Gurbani. He was the devoted father of Nina Kishore and her husband Dr. Ameet Sarpatwari, and of Monica Kishore and her husband Dr. Shushan Rana. He also leaves behind his siblings Dr. P.N. Pandit and Dr. Kiran Bulusu. Dr. Kishore received his MD from Andhra University and his MPH in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Kishore dedicated his life to the treatment of addiction as a disease rather than a social problem. He developed a treatment methodology known as the "Massachusetts Model", which will outlive him as one of the first outpatient models of addiction treatment. His efforts to help others will be widely remembered as he treated over 200,000 patients in the New England area. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a viewing at the DeVito Funeral Home, 761 Mt. Auburn St., WATERTOWN on Thursday, June 24th from 5 - 7 PM. A service will be held on Friday at the Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery for close friends and family followed by a private cremation. Dr. Kishore was a wonderful man. He was a saint. I still remember that dark night when my husband, his mom and I met Dr. Kishore many years ago. My husband was addicted to opioids. We were at our wits' end. We took him to rehab and they would not take him. My husband was out of control and we did not know how to help him or what to do. I called my insurance and pleaded with them to help us. They put me in touch with Dr. Kishore as we were driving home. I called him and he said bring him in. I said now? He said yes. I could not believe it and that was the beginning of a long relationship with Dr. Kishore. My husband and I went to Brookline a few times a week. My husband was able to get clean due to Dr. Kishore. Dr. Kishore saved his life. His methods worked. He was such a caring man. My husband would call him and he always called him back. He was always ready to help. He was a great man. My condolences to his family on a great loss. He was the best. I hope you are at peace, Dr. Kishore. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.
