RALPH BATES Obituary

BATES, Ralph E. Benevolent Philanthropist Ralph E. Bates, age 92, born May 30 1931, died April 29 2024. Ralph was the son of Ralph O. and Leah G. Bates. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn E. Dowell (1926-2010) and brother, George K. Bates (1928-1929). He leaves his nephew, Steven Dowell; his nieces, Bailey and Whitney Dowell; and his cousin, Bob Bates and his wife, Janice. He was very grateful for his close friendships with George Eramo and Bob Willing. Ralph was born in Watertown, Massachusetts and grew up in the Boston area. He attended Nichols College and Boston University. He made his living in real estate by purchasing and managing apartment buildings and creating the real estate newspaper Greater Boston House Buyers Guide. Ralph was a benevolent philanthropist and his charitable donations were very important to him. He wanted to help those less fortunate and enjoyed giving back to the community. His generous donations have ensured that his name will be remembered for many years. In his earlier days, he enjoyed athletics such as tennis, basketball and softball. Ralph was unique and had a great sense of humor. He used to enjoy driving around in his Hummer with his large stuffed tiger in the front seat – going to the Century House, Prattys in Gloucester or the Legion in Manchester. In his more recent years, he liked the simple pleasures such as eating Pirate's Booty, ice cream and candy, doing puzzles with a roaring fire and watching the deer in his backyard. He also loved running his indoor trains and cuddling his cats, Lefty and Spooky. Ralph was very grateful for Aberdeen Home Care and the loving care he received from their caregivers until his final day. Funeral Services for Ralph will be held in New Brunswick, Canada. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, GLOUCESTER. Condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com

Ralph was a long time fixture at the Packer Ellis Tennis Courts in Winchester, MA during the 1980´s and 90´s. He brought his sense of humor, fair play and unique playing style every time he came down to the courts. He was loved by all of us who played during that time. If he won a Tournament, he would attach the Trophy to the Hood of his Car and drive around Town! We loved it! RIP Ralph. You were one of a kind.

Ralph played tennis in Winchester for many years ,and , everyone at The Packer Courts knew Ralph . Alex Popp remembers him driving around Winchester with the trophy from one of the tournaments on his roof. Total character, one of many at the Packer Courts, all under the watchful eye of The Supervisor, Whit Gray !

Ralph and his sister Lyn were lifelong friends with my mother, Betty Erikson. Our family holidays in Watertown were graced by Ralph and his mother and father in the early years. His dad would recite poetry by memory and mesmerized all of us. My mom worked with Ralph at House Buyers Guide...a wild and amazing journey. I too remember Ralph pulling up to our house with his Tiger in his hummer...walking into the kitchen...opening the oven and helping himself to the stuffing in the turkey! He was a genuine gentleman who enjoyed a good laugh and brightened our holidays for over 20 years....RIP

I had been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to provide transportation for Ralph over the past year. I was amused by his way with words... He used to tell me "You do alright, for a girl"
Rest well, Ralph. Thanks for the laughs.

Ralph was instrumental in Beverly Bootstraps' efforts to acquire a new facility a decade ago. His name is on our building and he will be remembered for his generosity and his commitment to helping people in need in the area.
Visits with Ralph were always interesting. Lucky was always very friendly, Spooky would hide and his koi fish were delightful. His love of the Red Sox and puzzles were always on display and one time we drank Manhattans together. He was a little bit of a scoundrel and always kept us on our toes. We will remember him fondly and with much gratitude.
Sue Gabriel, Executive Director of Beverly Bootstraps and all of our team.

Ralph was a character- he loved to stir things up. At the core, he was generous to a fault. He gave away a significant amount of his net worth to charities such as the Pine Street Inn, ALS, Beverly Bootstraps, YMCA, and many others. His goal was always to help the less fortunate. He will be missed.

Ralph was a great manager, coach and person to be around. Loved the House Buyers Guide softball team and spending my weekends cheering the team on! I was dating one of the team members, Michael Sutton. Now married almost 45 years! Thank you for your leadership to all the team members. Great parties too! Norah Sutton
