RICHARD COVENEY Obituary

COVENEY, Richard Marean (Boston, April 15, 1933 - East Falmouth, April 30, 2021) Dick Coveney did not go gently into that good night, but died as he wished in his home, overlooking Ashumet Pond in East Falmouth, MA, in the company of family and devoted caregivers. Son of Richard J. Coveney and Niña A. (Marean) Coveney, he was raised in Cambridge, MA and Barrington, RI, attending Shady Hill School and Barrington High School. He began his lifelong passion for sailing at Community Boating in Boston, and later played football for Brown University (BS Econ '55), where he met Nancy (Cutting) Coveney. They wed in 1956 and, after 50-odd years of marriage, were later divorced. After graduating from the Harvard Business School, he moved his family to Scituate, MA, because it had the best harbor. He began his professional career at Procter and Gamble, moved on to Pepsico (never allowing CocaCola into his home) and eventually founded one of the first leasing companies in Boston: Leasing Services, Inc. He retired early from his successful career and moved all his windsurfing equipment to Kalmus beach in Hyannis until he separated from Nancy, then settled in Falmouth and switched to kayaking. His happiest days included sailing the coast of New England with his children on his 44' sloop, Araña, going on walking tours in the Adirondacks and on the Cape Cod National Seashore, and being initiated into powerboat cruising in his 70s by his new companion, Margaret R. Steele, on her 38' Illusion. As was his fervent wish, his body has been donated to Harvard, and his remains will be interred at Mount Auburn Cemetery in three years' time. Dick was predeceased by his brother Christopher M. Coveney, his mother Niña A. Coveney and his father Richard J. Coveney. He is survived by his companion Margaret R. Steele of Edgartown, MA, children Kymm A. Coveney of Barcelona, Spain, Robin E. Coveney of Scituate, MA, Christopher C. Coveney of Boston, and his grandchildren Zaida R. Fernández-Coveney and Julia Calventus-Coveney of Barcelona, Spain, and Anthony DoCurral of Scituate, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Community Boating, Inc., community-boating.org/donate would be a sailor's delight. Bartlett Funeral Home 338 Court Street, Plymouth, MA 02360
