RICHARD CULLEN Obituary

CULLEN, Richard William Richard "Rick" William Cullen, DPM, passed away on December 14, 2024, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 73. A distinguished sports medicine podiatrist, Rick devoted over four decades to improving the health and mobility of his patients, earning widespread respect and admiration from colleagues, athletes, and the broader community. Born on June 18, 1951, in Boston, Rick grew up in Westwood, Massachusetts. He graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School, in 1969, before pursuing his undergraduate studies at Fairfield University, where he earned his degree in 1974. Inspired by his father's medical career, Rick attended the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine), graduating in 1983. Rick's professional journey was marked by excellence and innovation. He built his career at Sports Medicine in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he became a leading authority in sports podiatry. His expertise led him to serve as a consultant to the Boston Celtics, collaborating closely with their team physician to ensure optimal care for players. In private practice in Needham, Massachusetts, Rick specialized in custom orthotics and surgical procedures while mentoring medical residents through New England Baptist Hospital and its affiliated programs. His dedication extended to academia as a lecturer at Simmons University and as an active member of the American Podiatry Association. A cornerstone of Rick's career was his unwavering commitment to the Boston Marathon. For 25 consecutive years, he volunteered his time and expertise at the finish line, providing critical care to runners from around the world. His skill and compassion made him a trusted figure among elite runners and other athletes. Outside of his professional life, Rick was known for his engaging storytelling and quick wit. As a member of the Dedham Country and Polo Club for 25 years, he enjoyed his leisure time on the tennis court. He found great joy in boating and collecting marine art and antiques-passions that reflected his deep appreciation for the region's maritime heritage. Whether sharing meals or recounting tales with family and friends, Rick brought warmth and humor to every gathering. Rick was predeceased by his parents, Dr. John D. Cullen and Kathleen M. (Finn) Cullen. He is survived by his siblings: J. Douglas Cullen, Jr. (Melissa Hughes), Jennifer Cullen-Struhl (Evan M. Struhl), and Barry G. Cullen (Anne Havilland Cullen). He also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews; his former wife, Diane Brassard Cullen; and his longtime companion, Betsy Hargreaves. A Private Family Memorial will be held in January to honor Rick's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Temple University College of Podiatric Medicine scholarship fund via their website.
