Richard Painter Obituary

Richard H. of Malden, died at Brigham and Women's Hospital after a long illness with Myasthenia Gravis. He was 72. He also lived in Roanoke, VA, Winchester and Beverly, MA. Born in Thaxton, VA, he grew up in Troutville, and graduated from Fork Union Military Academy near Charlottesville, VA. He was an Eagle Scout and a Sea Scout. Enlisting in the Army during the Korean War, he served with the 2nd Battalion of the Army Corps of Engineers from Fort Belvoir, VA. Mr. Painter attended Roanoke College in Salem, VA; Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) School of Architecture at Blacksburg, VA; Boston and Harvard Universities before graduating from MIT in 1959 with a BS in Architecture. In 1963, he co-founded Beacon Architectural Associates of Boston, MA and was an active member of the firm until his retirement in 1993. Mr. Painter was dedicated to the world of architecture. He taught at the Boston Architectural Center (BAC) which was very close to his heart. A past president of the Boston Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), he edited their publication for many years and was affectionately known as "Mr. Parameter". Mr. Painter was a 1992 graduate of the New England School of Photography. He was an artist who also enjoyed portrait painting. An intellect who had a natural curiosity in all things great and small, he possessed a sophisticated sense of humor, and had a ready wit. He was a kind person who understood the value of family, friends and life. Mr. Painter was a member of the Boston Chapter of the WorldWide Church of God. He was a lifelong Democrat and active in the Democratic Party. He leaves his wife of 53 years Noreen; two daughters, Ann and Elizabeth; and a son, John Painter, all of Malden. Funeral services were private.
