I was blessed to have RIck as my mentor at BBN 1994-1999 (and after I left for the academe) and to work with him on many DARPA projects. Rick was truly the "Father of Middleware", and more than that. Circa 2001 I revisited BBN, and brought along a collegue, Carl Hauser, who had worked for 17 years at the famed Xerox PARC reserach lab. After we had an hour of discussion with Rick, Carl shook his head and let out a low whistle in awe, saying "That man truly understands how technology develops." Then back at WSU we worked on our first proposal together. Carl's comment was that I really knew how to do proposals, something I largely attribute to Rick's mentoring. The world was a much better place for him having lived in it.

I have known Rick professionally for many years around the 'Middleware' community and I am really shocked to hear this news. Rick was a giant of the area who made really significant contributions both to our understanding of middleware and also very significantly to the creation and maintenance of a vibrant international community around the area. He was also a very good friend to me and to many others in this community and he will be missed greatly. My condolences to his family and friends.

We offer our sincere condolences to the Shantz family. Rick was a kind and generous man. We loved his company as we watched our sons play basketball with the SHS team. May he Rest In Peace.
