Rita Bailey Gwin

GWIN, Rita Bailey On Sunday, September 7, 2008. Mrs. Gwin was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in New Haven, where her family was in the movie and legitimate theater industry. She wrote a book about the historic Shubert Theatre, the "tryout theater" for Broadway's greatest shows. The Shubert closed in 1976 following the death of her father, Maurice H. Bailey. Through the efforts of "Friends of the Shubert Theatre," an organization Mrs. Gwin founded, the theatre reopened in 1983 by the City of New Haven as the Shubert Performing Arts Center. Mrs. Gwin was also a prolific portrait and still life artist. She moved to Boston in 1997 and leaves a daughter, Dena, of S. Boston. Her son, Keith, predeceased her. Interment will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. Memorial Services will be private.
