Rita Mawn Obituary

MAWN, Rita Marie (Regan) Age 92, passed away at home in Gloucester, surrounded by her family, on November 11, 2024. She was the beloved wife of James J. Mawn for 52 years. She grew up in Charlestown, MA, the tenth of twelve children born to Jeremiah and Catherine Regan. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Boston City Teacher's College and a Master of Education from Boston University, she traveled to Europe and taught school children in nations recovering from World War II.

Upon her return, at a church dance, she met the love of her life, Jim.

Rita and Jim moved to Woburn and then to Winchester, where they raised their seven children. Rita was her children's greatest teacher and role model, pouring tireless energy and endless love into her family. School nights, after dinner was cleared, she presided over the studies of her six daughters and only son. Always their biggest cheerleader, she would stand enthusiastically on the sidelines at their field hockey games, sailing regattas, and wrestling matches.

When it came time for college tuitions, she obtained her brokerage license and founded Wingaersheek Realty. Her company focused on Wingaersheek Beach, a special place where she and her family spent the last 55 summers. Rita and Jim retired to Naples, Florida. In both Winchester and Naples, they spent time with many dear friends enjoying tennis, Bridge, and golf. In 2009, Rita celebrated her 50th anniversary of her marriage to her soulmate. While Jim's death, two years later, left a void in her life, she took great pleasure and interest in the lives of her seven children and twenty grandchildren. She particularly enjoyed her fantastic adventures with her youngest daughter, Marilyn, as they traveled the world together and were inseparable friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Kate Riley and husband Joseph, of Princeton, NJ; daughter Louise Mawn, of Nashville, TN; daughter Alicia Mawn-Mahlau (her late husband Sam) of Easton; daughter Rita Barger and husband James, of Charlestown; daughter Sheila Carpenter and husband Creg of Ann Arbor, MI; son James Mawn and wife Erica, of Concord; daughter Marilyn Mawn, of Boston; grandchildren, Sheila, Matthew, Devon, Joseph, Abigail, Christopher, Jonathan, Amelia, James, Scott, Julie, Mary, Patricia, Catherine, Ben, Kelsey, Brian, Emma Rose, James, and Ryan. Dear sister of Mildred Wojnar, William Regan, and the late Esther Flynn, Sr. Mary Licinius, Lillian Mahoney, Eleanor Woods, Claire Wolfram, Jeremiah, Joseph, John and James Regan.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank her caregivers Wender, Sophia, and Rose for their love, honor, and respectful care of our dear mother. Because of their dedicated care, Rita was able to reside at home until her death.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Visiting Hours from 9:00-11:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main St. (Rte. 38), WINCHESTER. A Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:30 A.M, St. Eulalia Church, 50 Ridge St., Winchester. Interment Wildwood Cemetery.
