BASILE, Robert William 74, of Brookline and Dennis, passed away peacefully at home after a valiant 20 month fight against pancreatic cancer on the morning of Monday, January 18, 2016. Devoted husband of 34 years to Paula (Byrne). Beloved father of J. Robert Basile and his wife Elizabeth of Brookline, Lauren Crowley and her husband F. Andrew IV of Boston, and Amanda Mansfield and her husband Michael F., Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia. Grandfather of F. Andrew Crowley V. The youngest member in a family of eight children whose parents, John and Nellie, immigrated to the United States from Italy in the 1920s. Robert is an alumnus of Boston Latin School, Class of 1958 and Wentworth Institute, Class of 1962, earning a degree in Architectural Engineering. For over five decades, he dedicated his life to his real estate and construction business, primarily in the Town of Brookline. He enjoyed working side by side with his loyal sister, Beverly and his dedicated son, J. Robert. He served as a Town Meeting member in Brookline for over 25 years and sat on the Board of Directors for 15 years for the Brookline Affordable Housing Authority, spending the past seven years as the treasurer. Bob was very thankful for the life he lived. He loved tennis, swimming, spending time with friends, and dancing with his daughters. He had a wonderful family and a business in which he took great pride. He always said one of the most fortunate parts of his life was meeting, falling in love with, and marrying his beautiful wife Paula. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, January 20th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, WEST ROXBURY. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, January 21st, at 10:00 AM at Holy Name Church, 1689 Centre Street, West Roxbury. Interment Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline. My Brother Eddy told me of this news today. It seems as if he was the last link to my Basile puzzle. From all I have read this man wasn't too far from extraordinary. My Grandmother was Claire Divino (maiden name Basile). My father was Philip (he too past from cancer in May of 2014). May they meet in paradise, I'm not sure if they ever did here in the physical. I knew Bobby as a young man and I remember a story he told about "being the voice" for his father. Apparently, he had lost his ability to speak so young Bobby plucked to be by his side to interpret for him. Bobby was very close to his parents and stayed with them up until their deaths even though he had his own apartment on Williams Street. I found this to be a very loving thing to do. May he meet his father in heaven.
