CERRA, Robert L. Retired Massachusetts State Police Sergeant, Monday, April 8, 2019. Devoted husband of Mary Joyce (Flanagan) Cerra, father of Robert Reno Cerra and his wife Mary (Hamel), grandfather to Katherine Rose and Abigail Rita Cerra. Son of the late Reno L. and Grace (Gorgone) Cerra, and a longtime Big Brother to Christopher Fenton of Worcester. A lifelong resident of Newton, he was a graduate of Suffolk University and the Massachusetts State Police Academy, where he later served as a guest lecturer. During his career with the State Police, he was assigned to numerous barracks throughout the Commonwealth, as well as the investigative division of the State Police targeting Organized Crime. After his retirement in 1994, he was employed as a security investigator for several Boston area financial institutions, and later served as an Assistant Director of Security for the Massachusetts Transportation Department. A lifelong member of Corpus Christi-St. Bernard Parish, the St. Vincent De Paul Society, the Big Brother Association, the Boothbay Historical Society, the Early Industries Association, and the V-8 Club of America. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts State Police Museum and Learning Center, and the Former Massachusetts State Troopers Association. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, April 13th at 10AM in St. Bernard Parish, 1523 Washington St. West Newton. Visiting Hours will be Friday evening from 4-7PM in the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St., WEST NEWTON. Cindi and I are deeply saddened by the passing of your wonderful and loving husband. We could not have asked for a better, friendlier neighbor.
He had a terrific sense of humor - Bob and I would sit out on the deck trading stories and jokes (maybe with a PBR or 2).
He'll be greatly missed. It was obvious he adored you, Mary Joyce.

Mary Joyce and Rob, I am so deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing. We have so many wonderful memories of Bob as a great neighbor and friend. He had a great sense of humor - I can still hear his laugh - and was such a caring, kind person. My heart goes out to both of you and all of your family. Bob will truly be missed by all those who knew him.

Our deepest condolences to Mary Joyce, Rob, and his family at this difficult time. As neighbors and then friends for many years, Bob and I shared many experiences, countless cups of coffee, lots of heartfelt debates, an ocassional yard sale, and even a couple road trips. Chris and I have known Bob for many years and it has been an honor to have known him and his wife and son. Bob was a caring individual who gave of himself to others. He loved his wife and his son and family very much. He was a wonderful Big Brother to my son Chris and mentored Chris for many years. It is my privilege to have known BOB and his family for all of these years. Our sincerest sympathy goes out to his family. Bob will be greatly missed by all who have known him.
