Dr. Masland interviewed me for Harvard Medical School. From the start he had me pegged for a paediatrician, even though I myself didn’t know this was what I wanted to do in medicine. He never pushed. He let me discover for myself that it was the right choice for me. Dr. Masland took a keen interest in every HMS student he had interviewed, and provided encouragement and support over the four years of medical school, in whatever rotation we were in, Paediatric or otherwise. I ended up practicing Developmental Paediatrics in Canada, and although I never made it back for alumni events at Harvard, I often thought of Dr. Masland and the way he had taught me to be a good clinician and teacher, both directly and by example. This winter, after mentoring some of my own medical students through the residency match process, I was reminded of Dr. Masland, found his e-mail address over the internet, and was able to send him a letter. In his response he indicated that he was well and still involved in the admissions process at HMS. Although it had been over twenty years since I left Boston, he remembered me. I wouldn’t be surprised if he remembered every student he had ever taught—he was that kind of man. There are many people whose lives are much richer for having known him.

Dear Masland Family...it is with great sadness that I hear this news Dr. Masland treated me in 1982..I credit him for saving my life...I was suffering from Anorexia....and he snapped me out of it with his straight talk and kindness..I have never encountered a doctor since with his bedside manner..I know he has been a godsend for many people...what a great man...

I was Dr. Masland's secretary in the early 1970's. He was the best boss anyone could ever have. His kindess, professionalism and sense of humor were always appreciated by everyone he worked with. Working with him for six years were years which I enjoyed because he was always so wonderful to be around. My deepest condolences to his family. He was one of a kind, and I will never forget him. Dr. Masland was my mentor at HMS and always had a twinkle in his eye when I dropped by his office. He put me at ease with his smile, his joie-de-vivre, and his interest not only in my medical career, but my family and my opinion on current events (or Yale football). I regret that I didn't get a chance to catch up with him since graduation; I will miss him dearly. My deepest condolences to his family, as I lost my own grandfather that same week.

Dr. Bob and I met when he was chairman of the Yale Alumni Schools Committee. I was a recent graduate and wanted to help interview candidates for Yale. He was the consummate gentelman in every way. He taught me a great deal about relating to teenagers and to Yale administrators. I admired the way in which he was able to talk to anyone on any level. We are all so much richer for having known him. I hope that he will be on the admissions committee for heaven.
My regards and condolences to his family,

I remember Dr. Masland reading the paper in our public relations office during his hurried lunch almost 50 years ago. To this day, he holds a special place in my heart. May he rest in peace. My most heartfelt and sincere condolences to you all. Carol
