February 12, 2020.

Hi, Robert.

I am writing this as if you are alive. For me, you still are.
Notice the date above. On January 13, 2020 is when I
learned of your death. From the 12th on I have relived our
youthful days together from our age 5 for me ( year 1963 )
well into the late 80s, my 30th birthday party in Melrose, MA.
Sometime in the early 90's and forward in years , life changes.

How did I learn of your death. Through the United States Chess
Federation, USCF. I teach (for free ) chess to children, beginners, or players
with a rating of 1250 and under. On the 13th I needed to look up
information about a few of the children. Knowing we played chess
and you had a Life Time Membership ( a gift given to you by your
mom in the early 70s) and you continued chess playing when I dropped
out of the picture in the 90s I decided to check how you were doing.
In the 2000s I checked and saw your rating had improved to about
1990 chess rating, I was just curious. Using USCFs membership access
I notice your home address to be Pennsylvania, showing PA. I thought
you had moved to Franks family home area to be with family. At this
point I could of stopped. (Just thinking stopping here and not going
further on.) There were more tabs of information, which
I thought would show nothing of value. I clicked on each on anyway.
On one of the tabs . . . in bold letters

12409891: ROBERT A SPINOSA (Deceased)

Shock. Shivers. Brain overloading. All emotions pouring in at once.
Emotions -
This cannot be true. A mistake.
Crying out NO!!! NO!!! NO!!!. Tears rolling down my eyes.

Voicing out to myself, as I am all alone in my chess room. Yet my wife who is
upstairs can hear me. This is wrong. Google search. I will do this.

Searching the obituaries proved your death is true. Tears and emotions flooding.
I called my sister, Cindy; and in a garbled voice telling her you died. She too was
in disbelief, saying I will look this up for you to be sure it is Robert. Calling back
she said, it is true.

Who will know of Robert Spinosa The Great? Only I. Only I. Only I will.

Who will know of 4:00AM on a Saturdays leaving 10 Harden Road to bike ride
to Winchester, MA Hond Pond (which is really Woburn, MA). In the ice cold April
Opening Day for fishing. Who will understand Tennis on Professors Row Tufts University
Tennis courts, tennis in the cold, the rain, and the sleet and snow; and of course in the
summer on the hot summer days. Who will know of perfecting the down and out five

Who will know of all the above times AND MORE we share together. Only you; and only I.

At first I thought, I need not know why or what or the cause of your death. As the days
moved forward; and my mourning started to slowly fade . . . Questions arise?
Dying the day afterChristmas? ??? People can die any day. Why after Christmas?
Why 12/26/2013?

Why? What? And no pictures being posted. Yet, the mental flooding of pictures and our
times we shared together filling my brain thoughts as I have been working.

So much more to write.

And Robert, I will visit you at the cemetery. Bringing my chess books and magazines and
chess set. Investing time with you once again.

Robert, do I dare to visit Somerville to learn other friends too may have passed away?

Robert, your family and friends and acquaintances have had seven years of time healing,
while I have only had 4 weeks. Only 4 weeks of knowing you have passed away.

Bob and I worked at Textron for many years. We enjoyed some light hearted moments as we "got 'er done". Such an enjoyable, fine and funny guy. I still use a couple of his amusing phrases. Rest in peace, Bob.

My thoughts and prayers to Bob's family. I worked with Bob at Textron and am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He was truly the nicest person and I enjoyed working with him. I know Textron will not be the same without him.

Having known and worked with Bob for may years at AVCO/Textron. After years of retirement I still recall Bob's positives ways of accomplishing his design configuration management responsibilities. Always responded with a friendly approach regardless of the daily pressure involved with his duties. Bob's help and guidance will surely be missed by all. I will continue to keep Bob in my thoughts and prayers as a person I was fortunate to know and work alongside with.

January 3, 2014

Have known Bob for many years and our trap fields will be empty without him. He was a great leader, a good man and a better friend. He will be deeply missed.

Bob was a great guy for all the years (25+) I knew him at AVCO/Textron. Aside from working together on job-related projects, I worked out with Bob every morning at the in-house health center. We talked about politics, life experiences, guy stuff, music, and everyday real-world situations. I just can't believe he's gone.

Dear Franky and family,
As a life long friend of the Spinosa family, and especially Robert, my heart weighs heavy for you all. The passing of Spin has left all who knew and loved him at a loss of words. He was simply the best, all his pursuits were performed to the best of his ability, wether it be family, friends, work, WSA, motorcycling, gardening, weight lifting, etc. Always performed with a smile, positive attidude, and a sense of humor. He always made time for everyone, because everyone counted. Again, our deepest condolences.

It was such a shock to see Bob's name in the paper recently. As a fellow worker at Textron, I admired Bob for his friendliness and easy spirit that made work a bit lighter and less stressful. he was always there when you needed something in the design documentation area. I repsected Bob for his honesty and open manner in which he dealt with his team members regularly. I am grieved sadly to know Bob has left our midst but will always remember him for being such a professional, friendly and kind person.

Dear Cousin Frank and Marlene, as well as Lisa and John;

Words can't express how I feel about Robert's passing. It was sudden and shocking...as well as the saddest news I ever heard in my life so far. I will never forget Robert. The way his humor made even the worst situations better. He will always be remembered to me as a brother. He coined the phrase "Franny Bird"...he called my mother that when she yelled out "Bob Bob where are the kids" from the other side of the lake while we were fishing when we went camping in Pawtuckaway...he was a very very special person to me. He helped me out with accounting class - and even through all his efforts, I passed the class!! (although I still hate accounting - never could get into it).

I am just saddened beyond belief about this. May he rest in peace with his Mom..and Dad.

I've had the good fortune to know & work with Bob for many, many years at Avco/Textron. Regarding work, Bob is the consummate professional; always willing to do whatever is required, always friendly & repsectful, always a gentleman. As a friend, no words can adequately describe the admiration & respect that reside in my heart/head for Robert, my "brother-in-arms". Please pray for me,sir; as I will for you for as long as my feeble mind holds out.

Bob was the Captain of my trap team the first few years at WSA and was a very supportive mentor. Bob gave so much of himself to the sport and to the WSA for many years. Bob always had a smile or a kind word and was very friendly to everyone he met. I am very sad to hear of his passing and he will be greatly missed. My sympathies go out to his family.
