Well, from what I've read of Robert, this is simply a minor setback.

I was so very sorry to hear of Robert's death. A bit bearish of build, when Robert played his diminutive instrument to accompany himself singing sentimental songs from earlier eras, or children's ditties, it was a bit of a visual joke. His ever-present somewhat mordant wit required listeners to pay attention to catch the odd nuances.
I acquired some instant reflected glory in our small local uke group when someone mentioned Ukelele Consciousness, and I remarked Oh, I know that guy.
You KNOW Robert Wheeler????
Robert also could whip up a mean macaroni-with-three-cheeses casserole good enough for a birthday dinner. It was my birthday. That was nice of you.
Strum on, Robert. We can't see you, but your spirit is surely nearby when ukuleles are playing.

I always enjoyed seeing Robert at Jake's home, and at various festivals. He was one-of-a-kind and I'm sorry he passed away. Ciao.

just wanted to add this photo of Robert and Jake, August 2014...Robert came almost every day to visit Jake, they'd sit on the patio and tell bad jokes and great stories....he was a wonderful friend to Jake. Good wishes to everyone.

I'm so sorry to read this news. I remember Robert fondly from Folk Song Society of Greater Boston musical events when I was a kid. When I moved to San Francisco in the mid-90's, he stopped by for a visit and I asked him for tips on keeping my cheap ukulele in tune. A few weeks later, I received an unexpected package in the mail -- with a beautiful ukulele that stays wonderfully in tune! I just took it out and played "Ukulele Lady" on Robert's behalf. He was a unique man, and I think often of his kindness. My condolences to his family, friends, and the wider ukulele world.

I remember the first time I ever heard a ukulele played was at a pot luck at the Schmidt's home or up at the lake. I miss those days as we are out in the Pacific NW now but will remember Robert fondly. So sorry for your loss but pick a star on the dipper and he will always be close.
