ROBERT WHEELER Obituary

WHEELER, Robert A. 81, died at home in Littleton, MA on July 13, only 4 weeks after being diagnosed with a rare leukemia. He was the founder of Ukulele Consciousness, and in various films and recent interviews, he often called himself the "pope" of the 3rd Wave ukulele craze. Long before the latest resurgence of ukulele popularity, Wheeler had begun acquiring ukes and memorabilia reaching back to 1850. He and his wife Margie together assembled a world-class collection of over 250 ?ukie babies' chronicling a nearly complete history of the humble little instrument. Robert (never Bob!) also founded Ukulele Consciousness, a philosophy devoted to sharing his broad knowledge and passion. He was known nationally among serious collectors, musicians and instrument makers and convinced several luthiers to build ukes for him. He was delighted to be a part of Ukulele Noir, an eclectic and dysfunctional group of Boston area performers. Wheeler's dedication and efforts on behalf of the uke were much appreciated by other stars in the field including the great John King and Mike Longworth. Tall, handsome and aware of his youthful good looks, Robert always wore Carhartt overalls and a bowtie while performing. Last year he published a series of short vignettes entitled Block Stories about growing up in San Francisco. He liked to photograph street scenes in the style of Cartier Bresson and idolized his friend Ivan Massar, the late Black Star photographer. Wheeler made his living programming computers, but exhibited very little interest in them and openly claimed to be incompetent. He was indifferent to sports, had no interest in church, and was not a member of any formal social group devoting his time primarily to ukuleles, photography and writing. Robert is survived by his beloved 4th wife, Margie, his daughter, The Reverend Diana Wheeler of San Francisco, and 3 grandchildren. Please see: www.badgerfuneral.com.

Well, from what I've read of Robert, this is simply a minor setback.

I was so very sorry to hear of Robert's death. A bit bearish of build, when Robert played his diminutive instrument to accompany himself singing sentimental songs from earlier eras, or children's ditties, it was a bit of a visual joke. His ever-present somewhat mordant wit required listeners to pay attention to catch the odd nuances.

I acquired some instant reflected glory in our small local uke group when someone mentioned Ukelele Consciousness, and I remarked Oh, I know that guy.
You KNOW Robert Wheeler????

Robert also could whip up a mean macaroni-with-three-cheeses casserole good enough for a birthday dinner. It was my birthday. That was nice of you.

Strum on, Robert. We can't see you, but your spirit is surely nearby when ukuleles are playing.

I'm so sorry to read this news. I remember Robert fondly from Folk Song Society of Greater Boston musical events when I was a kid. When I moved to San Francisco in the mid-90's, he stopped by for a visit and I asked him for tips on keeping my cheap ukulele in tune. A few weeks later, I received an unexpected package in the mail -- with a beautiful ukulele that stays wonderfully in tune! I just took it out and played "Ukulele Lady" on Robert's behalf. He was a unique man, and I think often of his kindness. My condolences to his family, friends, and the wider ukulele world.

I remember the first time I ever heard a ukulele played was at a pot luck at the Schmidt's home or up at the lake. I miss those days as we are out in the Pacific NW now but will remember Robert fondly. So sorry for your loss but pick a star on the dipper and he will always be close.
