While I have not seen Russell in many years, I have very fond memories of him at the Hingham Yacht Club, as a very passionate and spirited sailor.
My deepest sympathies to all of his family.

Russell was a key University of Wisconsin-Madison Sailing Team member in the 1980's who helped lead the team to College Nationals several times. He was a great teacher, teammate and roll model. He was always there to help fix, rig or build boats when you needed him. After College he continued racing those new fangled Techs on the Charles River and competed successfully across the country. He lived the spirit of being ready to race any boat, any time on any lake. We shared the same birthday and we checked in with each other annually. I talked with him a long time last year. I have passed the word of his passing to many a former Madison Sailor and we have some good laughs with some of the craziness Russell instigated. He will be missed and remembered by many. Good luck on your next Tech Race, Russell. I will see you on the great tech race in the sky sooner or later.

Russell was a passionate teacher of the art of solid boat handling. After each race he would seek out a competitor who needed a few tips. His generosity flowed to all. Russell mastered many types of boats but his fondest class and toughest competitors were in the Tech Dinghy on Tuesday evenings about the Charles River. There are too many hilarious Russell memories which his friends and rivals will fondly share forever.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Allen, David and Jim. I will miss Russell and remember fondly our adventures on Fearing Road, working on bikes, Turnabouts, 110’s and racing on Hingham Bay. Megan and I were fortunate to visit Russell last week. He touched us all in a special way and will be sorely missed. Best wishes, Marc Gibbs (Houston TX)
