SAMUEL LLOYD Obituary

LLYOYD, Samuel Samuel Thames Lloyd, III, age 72 of Sewanee, TN, died on August 31, 2022, at his daughter's home in Nashville, TN, surrounded by his family. The cause of death was complications from sarcoma. He was born in Brookhaven, MS to Marie Anne Spivey and Samuel Thames Lloyd, Jr. Sam's father's Air Force legal career took the family to various locations, including London, Washington, and San Antonio, and he completed his high school years in Canton, MS. Sam attended the University of Mississippi for his B.A. and after completing ROTC, he served as a personnel officer in the Air Force during the last years of the Vietnam war. During his posting at a radar station on the eastern shore of Virginia and a post in Alexandria, VA, he set for himself a reading discipline, including Dante, Dostoevsky, and especially the New Testament, that led to his completing a Master's degree in English Literature at Georgetown University. He subsequently completed a Ph D. in English at the University of Virginia and ultimately a Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, where he found his true vocation as an Episcopal priest. In his ordained ministry of almost forty years, Sam served as an Asst. Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, teaching courses in religion and literature (1981-84); Assistant to the Rector and Chaplain at St. Paul's Memorial Church in Charlottesville, VA (1981-84); Rector of St. Paul and the Redeemer, in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL (1984-88); University Chaplain at the University of the South, in Sewanee, TN (1988-93), Rector of Trinity Church in Boston, MA (1993- 2005) and (2011-2017); and Dean of Washington National Cathedral, Washington, D.C. (2005-11). Sam was a man of spacious vision and a deep, abiding love of God. As a preacher, teacher, and pastor, he premised his ministry on a generous spirited, open minded, intellectually alive Christian faith. As he put it in a collection of sermons, called Soundings, he sought to use the weight of word, image, and story to probe the depths of human lives and point to the transformational power of the mysterious love at the heart of the universe. Sam is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marguerite; his daughter, Cooper, (fiancé Peter) of Nashville, TN; his son, Gabriel (Kelly) of Clarksville, TN; his sisters, Aletha Burge (Curt) of Gulfport, MS, Lucy Lloyd of Gulfport, MS, Ruth Bishop (Wade) of Gulfport, MS, and Susan Lloyd Stokes of Clemson, SC; his brother, Lewis Lloyd (Liz) of Mountain View, AR; and many other devoted relatives. As a commendation in a recent honorary degree expressed: "Through [his] recent illness, [Sam's] faith continues to preach itself with characteristic humility and strength, bearing witness as eloquently as [his] renowned sermons." A Service will be held on Wednesday, September 7th at 2:00 PM at All Saints' Chapel, the University of the South, Sewanee, TN, with Burial following in the University Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the School of Theology at the University of the South, 335 Tennessee Avenue, Sewanee, TN 37383, Virginia Theological Seminary, 3737 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22304, or Trinity Church, 206 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA 02116. Sam, my brother-in-law leaves quite a legacy. I met him when I was 8 when my sister, Marguerite started dating him. He was always kind to me as a child and was sincerely interested in my life. When I was a teenager, Sam taught me about the difference between the Democratic and the Republican parties, and encouraged me to be a Democrat. In my young adult years we had lively conversations and exchanged letters about spirituality and Southern literature. I remember visiting Sam and Marguerite, in Charlottesville and then in Chicago when I was in college at Randolph-Macon Woman´s College. Later I attended his conferences on religion and Southern literature at Kanuga. My parents were thrilled when they came to live in Sewanee in the 1980s. We so enjoyed visiting with the Lloyd family at 4th of July picnics in Monteagle Assembly. How very fortunate Sam´s family, colleagues, and friends have been to receive his love and wisdom over the years. He is missed and the world had lost an extraordinary man. May all be comforted in their grief.

Marguerite, Cooper, Gabriel,
My deepest condolences to each of you on the loss of your husband and father. I knew him from my time at the Washington National Cathedral.
I remember him mostly for his quiet manner and his tireless work to bring peace to a troubled world as Dean of the Cathedral. While it is sad to lose him so soon I am honored to have known him and grateful for the work he has done in making this a better world.

Caring thoughts to Marguerite and all The Very Reverend Sam Lloyd´s family. As our Teacher journeys into the ages, we are eternally grateful for Sam enriching our lives through intellect and spirit. He joins loved ones and brethren, like Bishop Tutu. Their poignant amalgamation in the Cathedral´s space and at the Lloyd's home will remain most enriching. In peace. Your faithful flock.

Sam- I remember you from an earlier, more innocent time in high school in Canton. Through card games, teen age pranks and debate team, I knew you as a deep thinker who sought answers to questions most of the rest of us never thought to ask. I never thought of you as a future priest, but I was not surprised that that was the path you ultimate followed.
I salute you for a well lived life and a well deserved peace.

Sam made the sense of God alive and real ... and opened our eyes to catch glimpses, as he would say, of the beating heart of love at the center of the universe. How fortunate we at Trinity were to have Sam and the Lloyd family with us. Thank you, thank you. May you rest in the Eternal Peace you shared.

Mrs. Lloyd, Cooper and Gabriel,
I will never forget Sam's brilliant and well thought out sermons while I attended Trinity. But I what I will remember most about him is his love for humanity and call to social activism, and making things right.
I am truly sorry for your loss, and a loss I might add to us as Christians. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
