Sara MASLIN Obituary

Maslin, Sara O'Neil
Of Cambridge, age 67, died quietly with her family at their home in Newburyport on Sunday evening, November 17. She had been struggling with advanced lung cancer for several years. Sara spent her professional life as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, most of it at Harvard Vanguard in the Watertown Center. She also ran a private practice and took great care with her group patients, most of whom were schizophrenics. Sara grew up in West Haven Connecticut, received her B.S. in Nursing from Salve Regina in Providence, R.I., and her Masters in Nursing at Boston College. She has lived in the Huron Village neighborhood, Cambridge, Mass., for most of her adult life. She is survived by many loving cousins and their children and grandchildren in Connecticut, by her younger brother, Edward Thomas O'Neil of Newburyport and his wife, Delia O'Connor, with whom she lived for the past 10 months, four of those months as a hospice patient. She is further survived by her nieces Maureen O'Neil, San Francisco, California, and Amy O'Neil, Chicago, Illinois. She is pre-deceased by her older brother, Hugh O'Neil, Marino Valley, California, and by her parents, Hugh and Helen O'Neil of West Haven, Connecticut. Most importantly she is survived by her beloved dog, Paulie Maslin, a Jack Russell terrier rescue dog. Among her many generous impulses, Sara devoted spare time to donating her help at an animal rescue shelter in Medfield, Mass. A Memorial Service will be held at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in the coming weeks for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, any donation can be sent to Forever Home Rescue, 106 Adams Street, Medfield, MA 02052.

Sara, I am so thankful that our paths crossed in this world, and that I had the privilege of knowing you. I will never forget your thoughtfulness, kindness and concern. You brought peace to so many people - now you are at peace and are free from all illness. When I think of you, it will always be with a smile. Rest easy my friend....

Sara was a lifesaver. So supportive, but tough as nails when that approach was what was required. I offer her family my deep appreciation for her expertise and vitality, and am so sorry I did not have a chance to connect with her later in her illness.

Sara was my clinical sup at Revere Community Counseling Center back in graduate school at BC - it did not take long to become friends. She was smart, cheerful, and so sweet on so many levels - I will miss you my friend.
