SOLDANO FERRONE Obituary

FERRONE, Soldano M.D. Ph.D. It is with great sadness that we inform you that our husband, father, brother, and grandfather has left us. Soldano Ferrone M.D Ph.D. died on January 10, 2023, after an eight week battle with Covid. He was 82. It is impossible to adequately describe his enormous impact on the world of cancer immunology, translational research, and the scientific community over the past 60 years. He collaborated with scientists all over the world, mentored countless young researchers, published over 1000 manuscripts, edited and authored over 100 books, and developed numerous novel antibodies and immunotherapeutic strategies. While his accomplishments and contributions are immense, what brought him true joy were his four grandchildren, family, and friends. Agnes was the love of his life. She provided him tireless support throughout their 52 years of marriage. He was immensely proud of his two children. Their respect for his dedication and scientific rigor led them to surgical oncology and orthopedic oncology. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Ferrone; daughter, Cristina Ferrone; son, Marco Ferrone; son-in-law, Joseph Schwab; daughter-in-law, Courtney Dawson; grandchildren, Peter, Annamaria and Joseph Schwab and Andrew Ferrone; as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Pio and Marina Ferrone. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Visiting Hours in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Cathedral of the Holy Cross, 1400 Washington Street, Boston, on Sunday, January 15, 2023, from 2-4pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the church on Monday, January 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Burial will be held in Bella, Italy, in July. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Soldano Ferrone M.D Ph.D. may be made either to the Cedars-Sinai Department of Surgery Immunology Research Fund or the MGH Department of Surgery Research Fund. https://giving.cedars-sinai.edu/soldanoferrone Contact : Gregg Simpson [email protected] https://giving.massgeneral.org/ Contact: Meagan Coons [email protected] William J. I am so sorry to learn belatedly of Soldano´s passing. I helped him with a legal matter and we became friends. My daughter Anna worked in his lab during a summer break from college and he was a wonderful mentor. He gave her many opportunities and treated her very seriously.she will never forget his kindness. I know that he was absolutely devoted to his research and loved medicine. A lovely man.

Professor Soldano trained me to write research grants and was instrumental in my success in publications and grants. I was fortunate to be a co-author in his publications. He was a Gentleman and a Professor of the Highest Order! As a practice in my religion, every day morning I pray for his soul to rest in peace and feed birds in my backyard in his name. He will be remembered in every day of my life. May his soul Rest in peace.

Dear Dr. Christina:
I was shocked to note that our beloved professor Soldano Ferrone has passed away. My research at John Wayne Cancer Institute, affiliated with UCLA, and in Terasaki Foundation Laboratory was brightened by association with Prof. Soldano. He helped my research projects to win NIH grants. I was honored by his co-authorship of a significant publication of mine. I tried to get him to become a member of the Terasaki Research Institute after the demise of Prof. Terasaki. He visited my house in Los Angeles. His article in "Immunology Today" is still before my eyes. It is such a thought-provoking article that strongly stimulated my research. I owe my research progress to my beloved Professor Soldano Ferrone. I simply can not believe he is no more with us. I love him dearly. May his Soul rest in peace. With love and regards to you and your family. He is still in our hearts. May Lord Bless his soul. Mepur H Ravindranath, Los Angeles, CA

Dr. Ferrone allowed me into his lab as an intern at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. My time there reaffirmed my interest and furthered my career in immuno-oncology. His dedication to science as well as the development of future scientist, has and will continue to, leave an immeasurable mark on science and all of humanity. My thoughts and prayers are with your families.

Dr. Ferrone was a tireless worker, committed to Science and a great friend. He recruited me to New York Medical College and had great faith in me that I/ would through the ranks. He had a gift of recognizing people and supported them. May his soul rest in peace, a peace well deserved since his life was one of work that he tirelessly fulfilled. Shakuntala, my wife was in the same lab as Cristina, Alan Houghton and then Jedd wolchuk. Both of us are deeply saddened by the news but we are sure that he is in a much happier place. I have the weirdest story! Dr Ferrone instructed me remotely for 3 years. When I´m joined his lab with so many goals and hope he is gone! Among dozens of professors and attendings I worked with in person, He taught me not only the science, but also the right attitude of a scientis the best possible way , while he didn´t even needed to do that in person. A father of many...
