Sandstrom, Sonya Elizabeth Age 25, daughter of Harold Sandstrom and Wanda Bacon of Belmont, MA, and sister of Raisa Sandstrom of Northampton, MA, died in her sleep at her home in Belmont on Monday, January 12, 2015. Born October 3, 1989 in New York City, she lived most of her life in Belmont, was a graduate of Belmont High School, and was a student at the Woods College of Advancing Studies at Boston College. She worked at a number of jobs in and around Boston, most notably Jewish Community Center Preschool of Brighton and United Cerebral Palsy of MetroBoston in Watertown. A compassionate young woman, Sonya participated in organized walks and other charitable fundraising events, including the annual Kostick Kup ski race and dinner for New England Disabled Sports. In addition to her parents and sister, survivors include her grandparents Ada and Charles Bacon of Batavia, NY, her grandmother Judith Hawke of Killingworth, CT, and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visitation will be held at 4-7pm Friday January 16 at Hickey and Brown Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Road, BELMONT. Relatives and friends are welcome for open house at 59 Slade St. in Belmont after the wake. Burial will take place in the spring at a location to be decided. Memorial contributions may be made to United Cerebral Palsy of MetroBoston, 71 Arsenal St, Watertown, MA 02472, or to New England Disabled Sports, PO Box 26, Lincoln, NH 03251. After the wake tonight it's evident Sonya has touched many people with her warm and infectious spirit. I'll always remember Sonya as one of my closest childhood friends and will hold all those memories close to my heart. We loved her for her gentle warmth and how she looked out for people, caring at times when others might give up. She became part of our extended family. Many memories, mussels and fries 'dates', helping with the afterschool kids at the Cambridge Y, scheming in the art studio. We won't let her memory go, she is with us forever.
