STEPHEN CAVAN Obituary

CAVAN, Stephen Edward Passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston surrounded by his family. A multi-generational New Englander and a Newburyport resident for almost 40 years, he was born in Haverhill on November 6, 1953 to the late Joseph and Natalie Cavan. Stephen was a loving husband to his wife of 45 years, Susanne, and a devoted father to his children, Sarah and Teddy. Stephen graduated from Cardinal Cushing Academy and attended Georgetown University, where he was a member of the men's varsity lacrosse team and graduated in 1975 with a B.S. He completed his J.D. at the University of Denver College of Law, where he served as Managing Editor of the ABA Administrative Law Review. Stephen started his career as Staff Attorney in the Office of the General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. After serving as Partner-in-charge of the mutual funds national practice group at the Boston law firm Gaston Snow & Ely Bartlett, Stephen joined The Boston Company Advisors, Inc., where he acted as Senior Vice President and General Counsel and later as its President. He then went on to become the Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Massachusetts Financial Services. He served as a Director of the Boston Municipal Research Bureau and Co-Chair on the Boston Bar Association's Subcommittee of Investment Companies and Investment Advisors. He had significant experience in investment company matters in London, Dublin, and Sydney. Stephen was generous with his time and talents, volunteering for the Admissions Department of Georgetown University as both an undergraduate and alumnus and for the University of Denver College of Law as a Member of the Visiting Committee. He was a lifelong student of American history and enthusiastically researched the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, completing many pilgrimages to iconic battlefields. A great admirer of Thomas Jefferson, Stephen was delighted when both of his children attended graduate school at the University of Virginia. He loved the traditions and geography of New England, particularly the coastline of Maine and the mountains of Vermont, where he had a home for many years that he shared with his wife, children, and their beloved sheepdogs, Chloe and Moby. Stephen thrived on spirited and philosophical debate. As a younger man, he cherished fly fishing trips with his son and brothers in Montana and Oregon. More recently, he enjoyed the challenges of developing his golf game as a member of the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye, New Hampshire, where he also served on the Membership Committee. Stephen will be dearly missed for his powerful intellect, wit, and wisdom. He is survived by his wife, Susanne Cavan of Newburyport; children, Sarah Sutton and her husband Michael of Dallas, Stephen "Teddy" Cavan, Jr. and his wife Annie of Weston; grandchildren, Ryder, Thea, Axel, and Beatrice "Beezie"; brother, Philip Cavan and wife Huan of Tampa; and sisters, Nancy Walsh and Maryann Cavan of NH. Stephen was predeceased by his brother, Joseph D. Cavan, Jr. A private Memorial Service will be held at the family's home. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., NEWBURYPORT, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Cavan's family with his funeral arrangements.
