STEPHEN GROHE Obituary

GROHE, Stephen Foster Stephen Foster Grohe, born May 10 1935, to Marion Foster Grohe and Herman Grohe, died peacefully on December 17, 2017 in Newburyport. Stephen was predeceased by Judith Gail Clarke Grohe, his beloved wife of 52 years. He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Lynn and Laura Gail, Laura's husband Christopher J. Cattel Sr., granddaughter, Rachael Cattel, and his nieces, Denise Grohe Dorn and Linda Grohe Sakowski. He is predeceased by his brother, Bruce. Stephen grew up in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. After graduating from high school, he moved to Boston to pursue a career in commercial photography. When he was starting out as a photographer, he supported himself in part as a professional violinist. In his photographic career, Stephen worked primarily with clients from the high tech industry. His clients included Bose, Polaroid, Digital Equipment Company, and Raytheon. Stephen brought together an artistic vision informed by surrealism with a remarkable and fearless intellect. He said his goal was not to simply photograph a computer, but to create an image which conveyed the idea of the computer he was photographing. Calling hours will be held on January 13, 2018 from 4-6 at Twomey, LeBlanc & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High Street in NEWBURYPORT. Parking available behind the Funeral Home. Steve, Judy and I were friends since 1966, when Steve hired me as an assistant and lab printer while I was still in college. He made a point of teaching what he knew, which had a direct influence when I started my own photo career. I did a lot of in-camera special effects, which I learned from Steve (no Photoshop back then).

Steve and Judy made a point of acquainting me with photographers they liked, like Irving Penn and Steve Trefonides. Both were always great to talk with. I was inspired by their work and the very example of their lives. They will be missed by many.

To their kids and family, I'm so very sorry about your loss.

Steve and Judy were clients of mine when I started my photo consulting business.I grew to call them not just clients, but friends and was so excited to share my wedding day with them. Steve was indeed a giant in our industry not just because of his enormous talent but because he was brilliant, integral and had a huge heart.
He (and Judy as well) will be greatly missed.

What a vibrant and fascinating soul he was! I had the good fortune to share a studio space with him as I was just beginning my career twenty years ago. I think of him often and it always brings me joy.

Deborah & Laura:
We were privileged to know your Mom & Dad as great friends and neighbors in Newburyport. You were blessed to have such parents. And I don't have to tell you that Steve was a giant in his field. I wish that I could have experienced his blazing creativity when he was a young man. L.J. and I, and so many others, will share your loss. --- Reg & L.J.

Steve, Thanks for allowing me to hangout in the studio and be inspired while I was a college student. Again, thanks.

When I came to Boston in 1980 I met Steve and he hired me as one of his assistants. I learned a great deal in the year and a half I was with him. He will be missed.
