Terence Flaherty Obituary

FLAHERTY, Terence Carroll After a long illness, of Marblehead died peacefully on August 25th, 2009, surrounded by his family and the music he loved. He was 75 years old. Mr. Flaherty was born in Woburn, MA, and grew up in Charlestown, MA, Newport RI, Medford, MA and Philadelphia PA. At the time of his death, he had resided in Marblehead, MA for 45 years. He was the devoted son of Peter and Eloise Flaherty, and a beloved nephew of Congressman Thomas A. Flaherty. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Towne School of Engineering in 1956, and then worked in the Aircraft Engine Group at General Electric until his retirement in 2002. He received GE's Award to Inventors for his contributions and continued there as a consultant for several years after his retirement. Mr. Flaherty will be remembered by all who knew him for his sharp wit, intelligence and passion for music. He was a longtime subscriber to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Ballet, and played classical guitar. Mr. Flaherty also enjoyed many sports and hobbies, especially badminton, cryptic crossword puzzles, reading, and cooking. He was also a talented woodworker who made furniture and toys for his children. He is survived by his devoted wife Maria Flaherty of Marblehead, to whom he was married for 41 years. He will be sadly missed by his two daughters, Nora Flaherty of Brooklyn, NY and Deirdre Weed of Gloucester MA, his son-in-law Brian Weed and his two beloved grandchildren, Haley and Tyler. He also leaves five sisters: Sheila Borges of Cambridge, MA, Myra Schrode of Watertown, MA, Pam Carr of Port Jefferson, NY, Jenny Flaherty of Worcester, MA, and Brenda Romanos of Somerville, MA, as well as his aunt Marion Belliveau of Cambridge, MA and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom were dear to him. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Boston Symphony Orchestra or the Boston Ballet.
