"Tom Hutchinson" was a household phrase in my house when I was growing up and as an adult. My father, Simmons Lessell MD, trained in ophthalmology with Dr. Hutchinson, Buck Frederick, Ephraim Friedman, Robert Petersen, and Howard Liebowitz at The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. My father told me more stories about his fellow students and colleagues than I remember, but they all contained to varying extent personal warmth, empathy, and medical excellence. These colleagues remained in Boston for most or all of their careers at Boston Children's Hospital, The Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston University School of Medicine, Albert Einstein Medical School, and Ocular Consultants of Boston. My father often pointed out that in addition to his personal warmth and surgical skills, Tom Hutchinson (and Buck Frederick) had great business acumen which enabled them to provide personalized superior ophthalmic care to patients. My father's admiration for Dr. Hutchinson was passed on to me through the many stories he told about him and other MEEI fellow students. I hope that his surviving family and friends are also filled with wonderful stories and memories. -Ephraim Lessell M.S.T.

Tommy was the son of Doc and Helen Hutchinson. We always enjoyed visiting their home during Halloween. Helen always had candied apples for me and my brothers and sisters. Doc, Helen and dad were great friends. Dad was very proud of Tommy's accomplishments as if he were his nephew. Condolences to the Hutchinson family for the loss of Tommy.

We very much appreciated Dr. Hutchinson's attendance at my sister's funeral last December. She worked at OCB for many years, many years ago. Though we had not met him previously, we found him to be very gracious and considerate. Our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family.

I found this obituary this week and was so sadden to learn of Tom's death. As you may remember, I was the "Southern Girl" he hired while my former husband attended Harvard Business School.
I will always be eternally grateful for the kindness he extended to both Ed and myself.
June I remember your beautiful garden--and how both of you entertained my family when they visited from Savannah.
With sadness and thoughts for both you, June and Daniel.

Dear June and Daniel,
I had the great fortune of working with Tom for the past 15 years at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. He was one of the smartest, kindest, and most humble people I have ever known. I especially admire the dedicated service he provided to his patients, his colleagues, and to the field of ophthalmology for so many years. His legacy lives on in all of us. I truly miss him every day and my heart goes out to you.
With love and admiration,
Laura

BT was such a great guy and a kind and wonderful man. Hard to believe but I began at OCB as his secretary in 1972 when he was a young doctor and I was just a kid out of college. Oh my
I remember him with great fondness.
My condolences to June and Daniel.

Dear June,
Tom was one of the finest ophthalmologists I have ever met and I had the privilege to train as his fellow in the late eighties. He was a truly rare ,multi-talented, gifted man who was brilliant, a great leader, teacher, clinician, surgeon, and innovator. He was the consummate ophthalmologist admired by his patients and respected by his peers. Tom always seemed to me to be two steps above those around him. His time was well spent while with us!

Tom Hutchinson was a major force in the organ ization of medicine and a strong advocate of brining the very finest medical care to all of the community. He bridged the gap between academia and practical medicine and was a major force in the treatment of eye disorders for the disadvantage. He was the very finest doctor, comp[passionate, very technically able, and totally dedicated to his patient's well being. We are lucky to have had such a fine person among us. Chris and I send our deep sympathies to Tom's family.

Dr Hutchinson was a wonderful mentor in ophthalmology and he cared so deeply about his patients and the world of ophthalmology. He will be greatly missed. He performed cataract surgery out of charity on my Grandmother who was an immigrant to this country in the 1970's enabling her to see. A generation later, I had the opportunity to do my fellowship in glaucoma with him. He was a very knowledgeable and kind person and will be missed.

Tom was truly a caring man as well as a doctor with the highest credentials anyone could ever have. On more than one occasion over the 30+ years he was my Dr he personally called me to say he had straightened out scheduling problems on my behalf. Although traveling into Boston every 3 months was an ordeal, we always looked forward to seeing Tom and his assistant LuChi
who made the travel and sometimes extended waits bearable.

Dr. Hutchinson was truly a great man in too many ways to count. A number of years ago, he was instrumental in helping to get me the best medical care possible for a critical health issue. Tom also inspired me to get into one of his favorite hobbies - collecting antique clocks which is now a passion of mine. He will be very much missed, and his legacy lives on through his inspiration and kindness.

Dr. H diagnosed my glaucoma at age 30 in 1976 and followed me off and on for years right up until his retirement. No matter what doctor was doing my 3 mo follow ups, I was always sent back to Dr. H to be sure all was being done correctly. At just 72 I still have my vision and I credit him for helping me keep my vision.
A wonderful gentleman who was always fun to talk to and listen to. He shall be missed.
