THOMAS QUIN Obituary

QUIN, Thomas Gerard Age 60, of West Newbury, died Saturday, March 23, 2019, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, surrounded by the love of his family and dear friends, after a six-year battle with kidney cancer. He was the devoted husband of 24 years to the love of his life, Marian A. (Kapamagian) Quin. Born in Medford on February 19, 1959, one of five children of the late Edmund and Mary (Cummings) Quin, he was a graduate of Malden High School then went on to graduate from Western New England College. Tom dedicated his life to law enforcement, serving with the Massachusetts State Police for nearly 40 years. He entered the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 1979 at the age of 20. He was stationed at SP Concord, SP Leominster, SP Logan, Essex County DA's office, and the MSP CINRET Unit. He began his journey as a trooper and rose to the rank of Detective Lieutenant. Tom was acknowledged as one of the most skilled/tenacious drug investigators in the history of the MSP. He won numerous awards including the 2017 National HIDTA Unit Commander of the Year, the 2017 MSP Commissioned Officer of the Year, as well as awards from DEA and other Federal and State Agencies. Tom was responsible for the creation of the MSP CINRET Unit, a first of its kind in New England. He was a tremendous friend and mentor to hundreds of troopers, local police officers and federal agents. Although he spent countless hours with the police force, which was his second family, he was truly dedicated to his family, who were always his number one priority. He shared with them his love of hockey, golfing, the outdoors, and his passion for the New England Patriots. It was the deep rooted love of his family that made him so proud, so caring and so very protective of his entire family. In addition to his wife and greatest supporter, Marian, he is survived by a daughter, Hannah Quin; two sons, Anthony "AJ" Tanner and Brady Quin; a brother, Edmund Quin, Jr of Wakefield; three sisters, Marybeth Johnston and husband Kerry of Altamont, NY, Kathleen Roche and husband Edward of Arlington, and Theresa Quin of Stoneham, along with several generations of nieces, nephews, extended family and his extensive police family from near and far. Visiting Hours will be Thursday, April 4, 2019, from 4 to 8 PM at the Immaculate Conception Church, 42 Green Street, Newburyport. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 5, 2019, at 10:30 AM at the Immaculate Conception Church, followed by burial in Bridge Street Cemetery, West Newbury. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Thomas Quin to support Dr. Toni Choueiri's Kidney Cancer Research Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284. Please write checks to Dana-Farber and include Dr. Toni Choueiri's Kidney Cancer Research Fund in the memo section or via http://danafarber.jimmyfund.org/goto/ThomasQuin. Tom was a great, great guy! I always looked forward to seeing him at our daughter's games at Governors Academy. You could count on him having a big smile on his face when he saw you coming, and always made us laugh. Getting to know the entire Quin family made our time there special, and i'll always smile when I think of Tom Quin.
