THOMAS WALSH Obituary

WALSH, Thomas D. Of Braintree, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2020, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 90. Devoted husband of Mary T. (Francis) Walsh for sixty years. Cherished father of Tom & Karen Walsh, Joe Walsh, Mary & George Gawron, Rob & Tracy Walsh, Rita & Dave Root, Ann Walsh & Jonathan Ablett, Billy & Shannon Walsh and Teresa & Greg Cook; twenty grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a significant extended family, including his sisters, Mary Walsh, Sarah Kiely, Alice Cullen (deceased); and brother, Bob Walsh.

Mr. Walsh lived his first 30 years between Winchester and Gloucester. When he and Mary married in 1960, they moved to Braintree. Beyond his dedication to his family, Tom was passionate about learning, swimming, his Catholic faith, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Tom graduated from Northeastern University (AEE, BBA) and Lesley University (MS). He joined Boston Edison Co. as an apprentice lineman in 1950, provided power to the people of Boston in numerous roles, and retired in 1993 as manager of Transmission and Distribution. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He held several U.S. and Canadian patents and authored numerous technical papers and journal articles. He was a speaker at many national conventions, taught at Quincy College, and served on Northeastern University's Reseed program for improving science education in public schools. Upon retirement, he was a consultant on electric power in the U.S. and Asia.

Tom's legacy extended deep into the community. Since 1969, Tom was a leader in the Boy Scouts of America. He was awarded the Silver Beaver medal in 1999 by the BSA and the St. George emblem by the Archdiocese of Boston for his work with youth in Scouting.

He was our teacher, advocate, moral compass, and standard bearer; a champion for his loved ones in all of their endeavors. He will be deeply missed, celebrated, and remembered forever.

Saddened about learning of the passing of your dad. I remember Mr. Walsh to have very, very strong integrity - great husband & wonderful father! Remembering being in his presence adds strenth & integrity to my day!
I recall Tiger, the frosty cold winter mornings.. you would wipe the windshield no larger than a silver dollar and cranked " That Smell " ( Lynyard Skynyard ) get to Braintree High School in plenty of time. I would go back to those days and do it again in a second.
Sincerely,
Joel P Luongo

To Mary and all Tom's family - I'm so sorry for your loss. I know you only from St. Clare's. I usually sat a few pews behind you and sometimes at coffee after mass. Tom always had a welcoming smile for everyone. But what really warmed my heart was the way he would help you with your sweater or your winter coat before leaving church. I am so glad I was on the receiving end of one of Tom's smiles on a few Sunday mornings.
Mary, my prayers are with you and your family as you grieve your loss. May the love and peace of Jesus bring you comfort and strength.

Our thoughts and prayers to the entire Walsh Family!!! I have fond memories of weekend trips to Gloucester when we were all so young... Then seven years of Boy Scouts at Saint Clare's Church where Tom helped me to earn my "Eagle Scout Award"... Tom even taught me to drive a car!!!... Super nice guy!!! Love & Hugs to all, Rick Devin

Wow, 90 wonderful years. I lived on Linda Road, down the street from the Walsh family. (kindergarten until graduation in 1984.) I have wonderful memories of The whole family. I would say remembering way back Mr. Walsh was a great role model as a Christian and devoted family man. He was firm while always being loving and calm. I think back to many games played in their yard. (Red light, green light, and hide and seek) What a blessing to have known him. Prayers to the whole family. May happy memories help to fill your emptiness.

One of my favorite adages perfectly describes Tom. "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit."

I am so forty to hear of Tom’s passing. He was a true gentleman and source of strength for the Catholic Committee on Scouting. His witness to his faith was an inspiration to young and old. Tom will be greatly missed!

My deepest sympathy to the Walsh family on the passing of Tom. Tom was an incredible person who was always ready to help someone in need.
Tom was an incredible help to me and the Ranger Staff at Camp Squanto and Camp Child in Plymouth. Tom was used to doing the impossible and helped make the facilities second to none.
Tom will be remembered by many people but especially by his family. He left them the great treasure of his example and love.
Rest in peace in the wonders of Paradise.
