WILLIAM APTHORP Obituary

APTHORP, William Osgood "Bill" Was born in Salem MA Nov. 21, 1921 and died in Concord MA Jan. 24, 2013. His parents were Robert East Apthorp and Esther Williams Apthorp. After the family moved to Milton, MA, Bill and his brother Jim attended Milton Academy and Harvard College. Bill served in WWII as First Lieutenant in the Navy on the USS Alywin (DD355) in the Pacific, and then taught navigation at the ROTC program at Princeton Univ. where he also coached their ice hockey team until his discharge April 1946. He met his future wife, Elsie Ogden Janeway, while spring skiing on Mt. Washington in 1946. They were married June 21, 1947. His fond memories of Christmas vacation with his cousins, the Thompsons of Fairhaven Hill, in Concord, led him to later build a home with Elsie in Concord. They raised their family near the Punkatasset ski hill and pond. In July 1946 he began working at Tucker Anthony Co. in Boston where he was a partner until he retired in Nov. 1986. Bill was most passionate about skiing and sailing. His first overnight skipper experience was sailing form Marblehead, MA to Maine when he was 15, and culminated with a transatlantic sail in 1985. Bill was a long time member of the Cruising Club of America. He and Elsie cruised with family and friends in Norway, Greece, Italy, Turkey, and most of all the coast of Maine. He was an original member of the Drifters Ski Club in Jackson, NH. In addition to taking many ski trips with family and friends out west and in Europe, Bill ski raced until he was 79 years old. Bill leaves behind his wife Elsie; his brother James Apthorp, MD of CA, his children, Robert East Apthorp, Bunny A. Goodwin, Nancy A. Barnhart, Helen S. Apthorp, Elinor A. Stapleton; his grandchildren, Owen Christopher Barnhart Roger Laurence Barnhart, Morgan Janeway Goodwin, Robert Alton Goodwin, Liza Williams Goodwin, Alex Greenspan, Eli Greenspan, Meredith Apthorp Stapleton, Philip East Stapleton; one great grandchild, Ryder Barnhart. A Memorial Service will take place Mon, Feb 11, at 11am at Newbury Court, Concord, MA followed by a reception also at Newbury Court. Elsie: I have only happy memories about Bill and our race to Bermuda on Blue Water, and getting to know you both thereafter.

We are so sorry to hear that you have lost Bill, but he did live a long and productive life....we will all miss him.
