WILLIAM DALZELL Obituary

DALZELL, William H. Jr. "Bill" Age 84, of Marshfield, passed away on April 13, 2021, with his family at his side, after a multi-year battle with cancer. He was born in Chatham, NY, in 1936 to William H. Dalzell and Isabell (Gorrie) Dalzell. Bill was the first person in his family to attend college. In 1954, he entered MIT where he earned his undergraduate (1958), graduate (1960), and Ph.D. (1965) in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation, he became an Assistant Professor of chemical engineering at MIT. After several years at MIT, Bill spent the next 26 years at Polaroid, before returning as a Lecturer and practice school leader at MIT for the next 20 years. Bill and his wife, Pat, would travel to several countries, with MIT chemical engineering graduate students, to solve companies' challenges. Bill loved teaching. This carried over into his personal life, where he taught his kids, friends, and grandchildren to ski. Maine was one of his favorite places to be, whether that was on the trails of Sunday River, or on a boat on Twitchell Pond. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Patricia (Lloyd) Dalzell of Marshfield, daughter, Kim Riedell and her husband, Dave of Needham, and his son, Billy Dalzell, and his wife, Devon of Steamboat Springs, CO. In addition, Bill leaves behind two granddaughters, Michaela and Sara Riedell of Needham, and two grandsons, Oscar and Oliver Dalzell of Steamboat Springs, CO. Bill is also survived by his sister, Isabell Jean DiBernardo of New Jersey, and sister Helen Lattarulo of New York and was predeceased by his sister Alice Dalzell. Bill has touched many lives and will be remembered most as an amazing chef. He will also be remembered for his quick wit, his pessimistic optimism, his hatred for TV, his secret love of Oreos, and his incredible love for his family, especially his grandchildren. Visitation on Thursday, April 22, 2021, from 5pm to 7pm at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in MARSHFIELD, will be immediately followed by words of remembrance at the funeral home at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, Bill has requested that donations be made to the MIT Chemical Engineering Discretionary Fund: https://giving.mit.edu/explore/schools/engineering For online guestbook, driving directions, and other helpful information, please visit the website macdonaldfuneralhome.com.
