Frank Sugrue Obituary

SUGRUE Frank, of Boston and Palm Beach, co-founder, owner, president and producer of The Charles Playhouse, which was one of the most prestigious theater companies in the United States, died Wednesday, March 1, 2017. Predeceased by his parents and siblings, Frank is survived by nieces and nephews and many friends. Private interment will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. A Celebration of Frank's Life will be held in the future. Born and raised in Dorchester, Frank earned his Bachelor Degree from Boston University and Law Degree from Northeastern University. Farewell Frank. It was a pleasure knowing you and a hoot working as your "Assistant to the President" at the Charles Playhouse. You were a singular guy and you'll be missed.

I first knew Frank when I was working at the Charles Playhouse as a high schooler back in the early 1960s. I saw him as a quirky, interesting and charismatic character even then, and as I continued working in the Boston theatre world, my impression never changed. What I remember most was that he was as friendly and respectful to a 17-year-old usher as he was to the leading lights of the Boston stage. I was, and am, impressed.
