John P. "Jack" Riley Jr.

RILEY John "Jack" P., Jr. 95, of Marstons Mills, died February 3, 2016 at Decatur House in Sandwich. He was the husband of the late Maureen (Hines) Riley to whom he was married 40 years. Maureen was the love of his life. He was the son of the late John P. and Elizabeth F. (Cunningham) Riley. He grew up in Medford and was a three-sport athlete at Medford High School. He entered Dartmouth College as a member of the Class of 1944 but graduated with the Class of 1947 due to his service as a Naval Aviator in the Pacific during World War II. He was the captain of the 1947 hockey team and was a part of Dartmouth's historic 46 game win streak. In 1948, he played for the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team that competed at St. Moritz, and was a player/coach for the 1949 U.S. National Team that competed at Stockholm. Starting in 1950, he began a 36-year career as the Head Hockey Coach for West Point while also serving as Assistant Athletic Director. He retired in 1986 as the second winningest hockey coach in NCAA history. In 1960, he lead the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team to a stunning upset in Squaw Valley, CA as the U.S. team captured its first ever Gold Medal in U.S. Hockey history. Jack twice received both the Spencer Penrose NCAA Coach of the Year Award and the Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service and contributions to USA Hockey. He has been inducted into the Army Athletic Association Hall of Fame, Medford High School Hall of Fame, Dartmouth College Hall of Fame, USA Hockey Hall of Fame, Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame, International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame, and the US Olympic Hall of Fame. For 30 years he was a member of The Hyannisport Club. It was a place where he loved to be and play golf. It was also where he had several of the ten hole-in-ones of his lifetime. He is survived by his loving children and their spouses, Jay and Debbie Riley of Wrentham, MA, Mark and Linda Prusinowski-Riley of Newton, MA, Rob and Debbie Riley of Hamilton, MA, Brian and Marybeth Riley of West Point, NY, and Mary Beth and Stacey Riley of Lakeville, MA; his brother Jim Riley of Billerica, MA; his grandchildren, Sarah, Brett, Lauren, Jack, Kathryn, Danielle, Brendan, Jack, and Mickey; his loving companion Paulina Connolly of Hyannisport; his devoted friend and caretaker Colleen Delaney of Cotuit; and by several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers Bill and Joe. Visiting hours will be from 3:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Rd. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 10 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 76 Wianno Avenue, Osterville, MA, followed by burial at Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
