Karnig Boyajian Obituary

Boyajian, counselor, retired Army Colonel, advice-giver, mentor, epic story teller, teaser, fashion icon, food lover, friend, doting grandfather, loving dad and husband, died on March 15, 2021.

His energy was boundless and he was a true force of good and kindness in the universe. If you knew him, you knew there were things you could not avoid or resist in his presence:

His colorful and expressive story telling that kept us all glued to him, listener involvement not required (or preferred!). Even the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th time you heard it, you were just as riveted and engaged (whale case anyone?)

His love for food especially Armenian delights often cooked by his wife Carol, who he has now blessedly joined, and then lovingly by his daughters. Nothing topped his obsession with ice cream. Inspecting his freezer it was common to find 15-20 different flavors and styles ("they had a sale", "I got a buy two, get one free deal", "had to give that one a try"…). Of course, his grandchildren loved visiting and thrived in his care!

His intensity on topics and matters of importance to him and ability to articulate colorfully his views brought us into new areas of thinking

A sense of his fierce independence and authenticity and how he miraculously carried out a professional life in law always staying true to his values

His passion for "technology" mostly embodied in his vast collection flashlights and ink-jet printers (really!)

His teasing and relentless good humor that ensured he nor those around him ever took themselves or matters too seriously. He could take the fun poking as well as give it and it was a beautiful source of energy for all. Even at the end when talking was hard he cracked jokes and smiled to ease our pain. A kind-hearted giver to the end.

Beyond that, those of us who were even closer to Karnig would seek him out especially because he unselfishly provided the most important support, wisdom, comfort and love any of us could hope for:

He never forgot his own roots and the struggles of his Armenian immigrant parents and used his law practice to help hundreds of clients and families who lacked resources even taking on court appointed cases until the end of his practice.

Though he worked relentlessly…days, nights and weekends throughout his life he always made time for those of us who needed his support.

Karnig showered his children and grandchildren with affection, quick with a kiss and hug, and ever generous with his words of praise and encouragement. For his family, he provided love that we knew in the deepest way was unconditional and we were all stronger, more confident and more grounded because of him.

A Korean war veteran and retired Army Colonel, son of departed Kenos & Anahis, brother of Paul, Arthur and Arsen (Al), Karnig was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 50 years, Carol and his grandson Alden. His legacy continues to thrive in his grandchildren, Nicole, Matt, Foster, Jordan, Nicolas, Caroline, Carolyn Rose, Kate, Cordero, Sofie and Levon. They each cherished their unique connection with their "Papa" and carry on his kind spirit. For his children and their spouses, Charlie & Caron, Eddie & Alisha, Susie & Tommy and Karen & Brett, there is an unfillable void and yet he left them a foundation of love that will define their lives forever.

Rest in peace, dad. You are home. God bless you.

My condolences to Karnig’s family. We had a number of cases together over the years. He was a great lawyer with an excellent sense of humor. I knew a number of lawyers who served with Karnig in the Army Reserve. All of them had the highest respect for COL Boyagian. He will be missed. God Bless.
