Richard Miner Obituary

MINER Dr. Richard Leroy, age 97, of Greenfield, NH, lived with enthusiasm until he died at his farm, September 6, 2010. He was born in Newtonville, MA, July 29, 1913. The son of Edna Winifred (Dailey) and Dr. Leroy Matthew Simpson Miner. He grew up in Newtonville, MA. He prepared at Deerfield Academy for Boston University and McGill University where he earned his D.D.S., 1943. He went on to do post graduate work at Montreal General Hospital and the Walter Reed Hospital, after three years of military service with the Army Dental Corps he was discharged with the rank of Captain and went on to join his father in the practice of oral surgery in 1947 in Boston, MA. Dr. Miner was on the staff at numerous hospitals in the Boston area as well as New Hampshire. He held teaching appointments at Harvard and Tufts University, with an Assistant Professorship at both. He was an active member at the surgical staff at the “Thom Hospital Shriver Center” at the Walter Fernald School in Waltham, in addition to Hahnemann Hospital where he was trustee, MGH and Deaconess Hospital. An avid sports fan, Dr. Miner was team oral surgeon for the Boston Bruins for over 20 years, and briefly dentist for the Red Sox, in addition, conducted an office practice. From the age of three he always loved working and playing at his family farm in Greenfield, NH where he and his wife, Murlyn retired to actively participate in town activities, historical society, Greenfield and Congregational Church. He was known around town to the friends as “Doc”. While serving at Dibble General Hospital in Palo Alto, CA, during WW II, he met his wife of 63 years. Murlyn (Rodger). They married in 1947 and raised three children in Wellesley, MA. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Cheryl Mullen and husband Joseph of Greenland, NH, Heather Bower and husband David, of Nelson New Hampshire, grandchildren Jason, Drew, Heather and Joseph Mullen, Daniel, Jonathan and Eric Bower, great-grandchildren Henry, Sam and Anne Mullen and a son Richard of Greenfield, NH. There are no calling hours. Private Family Service and burial are planned. On Saturday September 18 at 3:30 P.M. at the Meeting House, there will be a gathering to celebrate Dr. Miner’s life. Contributions may be made in his memory to Home Health Care Hospice and Community Services, P.O. Box 496, Peterborough, NH 03458, or Greenfield Covenant Church, c/o Rev. Daniel Osgood, Greenfield, NH, or The Monadnock Community Hospital, 452 Old St. Road, Peterborough, NH 03458 c/o Laura Gingrass. Holt/Woodbury Funeral Service, 15 Pine Street, PETERBOROUGH, NH is assisting with the arrangements.

Dear Miner Family
It is with great sadness that I send this note. I am happy to have known Dr. Miner and to have been friends with your family growing up on Forest St..
My trips to the Farm in Greenfield and Camp on Lake Nubanusit will always be held in fond memory of my childhood.
My Thoughts and Prayers are with you all.
