Greggory Hokanson Obituary

NORRIS - Greggory Bill Manis Hokanson went home to his Lord and savior Jesus Christ on Aug. 4, 2011. Gregg was born May 22, 1990, in Bozeman. He was a mere boy of 21 at the time of his death. Gregg was serving in the United States Navy stationed at Fort Meade, Md.

Gregg graduated from Harrison High School in 2009. He was proud to be in the class in the same high school that was exactly 50 years after his grandma and 30 years after his father.

Gregg was such a friendly outgoing young man. He was known in the area for his summer lemonade stand that he ran for six summers in Norris. Many people from all over the country passing through Norris in the summer months would stop for a cool refreshing cup of raspberry lemonade, and by the time they left Gregg knew where they were from, where they were going and they knew the same about him.

Though young, Gregg lived a life full of adventure. After high school he spent a year at Montana State University and heard the calling of the Armed Forces. He enlisted in the Navy in 2010, went through boot camp in Chicago, school and training in Pensacola, Fla., and finally more schooling in Fort Meade, Md. He was proud to be part of the U.S. Navy, and his family was so proud of him for his service to his country.

He loved to travel and see new places. He took his grandma and grandpa to Boston for a week of Celtic basketball games and historical sightseeing in 2009. While stationed in Maryland, he spent time in Philadelphia, Virginia, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

One thing many people will remember about Gregg was his love of sports. He knew almost every NBA player currently playing and many from past years. He could recite statistics, records, teams, and just about anything else you could want to know about the NBA. He saw many NBA games in his short life. He loved the action of the live games. He met many players, got lots of autographs and saw several NBA venues. He also loved football, especially the black and silver of the Oakland Raiders.

Gregg is survived by his parents, Tim and Susan Hokanson of Norris; his sister, Katie (Cory) Burtchett of Norris; grandparents, Alfred and Dixie Hokanson and Bill and Shirley Purcell, all of Norris; great-grandpa, Paul Manis of Big Timber; great-grandmother, Beth Hokanson of Butte; his Uncle Keith and Aunt Ann and his cousins, Hailey, Josie and Gavin of Norris; his uncle, Kevin Hokanson and his cousins, Kassidy and Joree of Sheridan; his uncle, Doug Purcell of Townsend; his uncle, Mike Purcell of Texas; his uncle, Tim (Linda) Purcell of Evanston, Wyo.; and many great-aunts and -uncles.

Gregg will be missed by so many.

Funeral services will be at 11a.m. Friday at the Harrison Public School gymnasium. Burial with full military honors will follow in Red Bluff Cemetery near Norris.

A scholarship fund has been set up at Madison Valley Bank of Ennis and also at First Security Bank of Bozeman.

K&L Mortuaries of Harrison has charge of services.

At a loss for words. I remember the day Greg and I went out to shoot his senior pictures. We had a wonderful afternoon talking and looking for cool back drops to use. He was so excited about graduating 50 years after his grandmother Dixie. I was also one of Gregg's lemonade customers in the summer. I will keep these memories close as I pray for all of his family and friends.

How can anything we have to say make it better. I always get upset with God when there is loss. Then I come to the end of myself, and he carries me the rest of the way! I am so so sorry for your family, to have lost such a fine young man.

Greg's death is a shocking loss that brings sadness to the whole community... we all knew and admired the way he lived his life. But it is the hardest for the family... words are inadequate comfort , but that is all we have. Words of sympathy, solidarity and solace to all of you, with our prayers and sincere wishes for peace, healing and maybe someday, understanding. Rest in Peace dear Greg...you are gone but not forgotten...

I enjoyed the talks Greg and I used to have when he was working at the store. I remember how excited he was that Dan Rather got lemonade from him. He was a fine young man in my book. Condolences to his family. I know how it feels to lose a son.
