Dr. Paul Shennum, a luminary in both the aerospace industry and humanitarian endeavors, gracefully departed this world on September 26, 2023, at the age of 85. Born to Milton and Hazel Shennum in the tranquil town of Beresford, SD, Paul's journey was one marked by extraordinary achievements and boundless compassion.
His path led him to the University of Southern California on a prestigious scholarship, where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with an Aeronautical Sequence. Paul then obtained a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Washington.
Paul's illustrious career began with Lockheed Aircraft in 1958, where he tested the very limits of structural aircraft components. In 1960, he embarked on a lifelong career with the Boeing Company. Rising to the position of Vice-president, Paul's contributions to projects such as the Minuteman III ICBM, AWACS, and the Airborne Laser Combat 747, reflected his commitment to innovation and excellence.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Paul contributed time and compassion for others in the community. He led initiatives to support non-profit organizations serving homeless families in the Seattle area. His legacy lives on through his involvement with organizations like the First Avenue Service Center, the Compass Center, and his founding role at the Four Corners Foundation in Bozeman, MT.
He also shared his wisdom as a guest lecturer at MSU, inspiring students to navigate the complexities of corporate life with integrity and purpose.
In the tapestry of Paul's life, golf, storytelling, several rescued felines and genuine personal connections held a special place. He approached every interaction with warmth and authenticity, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Paul is survived by his beloved family: his devoted wife Sandra McManus, his daughter Julie (John) Cahill, his son Steven (Lisa) Shennum, his cherished grandsons Jack and Will Cahill. Additionally, he leaves behind a vast community of friends, including those of Bill W., who were enriched by his friendship and guidance.
If you would like to make a donation in Paul's memory and continue his legacy of compassion, the family requests that charitable donations be made to Cowboy Heaven Miniature Horse Safe Haven (
cowboyheavenminirescue.org). A celebration of life will be held on Saturday May 4 from 2-4 at the 1889 Barn, 12670 Portnell Road, Bozeman, offering an opportunity for all who were touched by Paul's life to come together in remembrance and celebration.
As we bid farewell to a visionary leader, a compassionate humanitarian, and a beloved friend, may we carry forward Paul's legacy of kindness, integrity, and boundless generosity.
