Penny Gaffney Obituary

Penny S. Gaffney, 70, of Bozeman passed away peacefully at her residence while surrounded by family, on Aug. 1, 2015.

Penny was born Aug. 5, 1945, in Livingston, Montana, to Merlin and Lorraine (Scott) Olsen. She was raised in Livingston and attended Park High School. Penny moved to Bozeman in 1960 and married her former spouse Paul Gaffney, where they raised four children.

Penny had a career spanning more than 45-years in the food services industry and management, including 25-years of service with the Holiday Inn Hotel of Bozeman. Through her work, she formed lasting relationships with coworkers and customers.

Penny was a kind and generous person with a heart of gold. She had a very open, outgoing, and friendly personality. Penny enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends, as well as maintaining friendships as far back as high school. She was a best friend to many and always remembered a friend's birthday. Penny also enjoyed cooking and hosting gatherings for family and friends. She enjoyed her retirement years traveling and visiting friends as well as spending time with her loving grandson Cooper, who brought her great joy.

Penny is preceded by her parents, sister Linda Martinez (Olsen), and eldest daughter Stacey Gaffney. She is lovingly remembered and survived by her other three children: Carrie Gaffney (Jeff Johnson), Pamela Gaffney, and Thomas Gaffney. Penny is survived by her sister: Murtle (Jim) Criger in Alberta, Canada, her brother: Robert (Saundra) Olsen in Helena, Montana, her grandson Cooper Johnson, and many nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

Condolences to the family may be offered at a celebration of life event that will be held at the Holiday Inn, on 7th North and I-90 exit, located in Bozeman, Montana, on Aug. 5, 2015, between 3-6 p.m. The family extends their sincere appreciation for the love and kindness that all have shown to Penny over the years.

I met Penny probably in 1974. She helped me get more than one job because of her caring personality, and her connections throughout the service industry.
She was a good friend, always a joy to be around, and if she befriended you, she always cared for you and made you feel special.
I remember walking into the Holiday Inn, and seeing her after I had left Bozeman for Whitefish and Spokane and I had not seen her for a number of years. Her greeting to me made me feel like I had never left Bozeman, her smile and hug was a ray of sunshine!
So sorry to here of her passing.

I am so sorry to hear that Penny is gone. I met her in 1966, and considered her a friend, from then on. I left Bozeman and returned then left, again, but Penny was always the same, warm and caring person, every time I saw her. This world will not be the same without her.

I am still in shock and utter disbelief...Why did I make it a point to pick up the Chronicle on my way home yesterday? You all know how much Penny meant to me, Dan, Danica, and everyone she ever befriended. She's been my counsel, my friend, and my confidant for the past 43 years at least. I've watched her light up the room with her smile, raise herself up from negative situations and always, always been a shoulder to share my highs and lows. She is a family member of ours and will remain in our hearts forever...Our prayers and love to all of you. Dan and Jeanie Heyder, Danica, Cody, and all the Spencer children
